How many uses per blade?

Once your blade begins to tear in stead of cut that's when it's time to change your blade. I've used mine at least a dozen times and it still makes smooth cuts.

do you really need to use this? I just use a knife to slash the bread

Strictly speaking? No, you don't need this. If you have a razor sharp knife and perfect dough and know just how to do it, a knife works fine. BUT, if you are in a hurry, the dough isn't perfect, and the kids were "sharpening" your knives, the couple bucks spent on this allows you to make nice, clean scores quickly and easily.

This is of Chinese make, But this is the good bread lame to use.
