Great pairings, illustrations, words... Poor wood quality, and box too big...
The quality of the wooden pieces in this set are not on par with the quality that I have come to expect from Melissa and Doug products. My daughter actually got a splinter from playing with them. I took a piece of sandpaper to them, and improved some of the splintering and rough edges, but I was a little disappointed. Also, when the box arrived, the pieces were aligned flush with the top of the box. But when I removed the pieces, I found a cardboard filler several inches high, which, when removed, made the pieces barely fill the box halfway. It looks like a big, half-empty box, and I didn't care for that. However, the quality of the printed images and letters, as well as the beautiful illustrations are very Melissa and Doug style and I was pleased with them. So I'm kind of on the fence about this one. (On another note, the font used in the small words printed beneath the pictures appears to be a different font. My clever students were appalled that the Q and other letters were printed differently on the two pieces that they are meant to match.)
