To tone you would want your hair lightened to a pale yellow or copper. If you are seeing red still it is not light enough to just tone out at that level. If your hair is very deep, it needs to be further lightened (bleach) before toning. For dark brown or black hair- it gets red, then orange when stripped of pigment. You can try toning, but it might not be enough. Best bet for dark hair is further bleaching and then toning or permanent color of your choice.
