When adjusting the backrest of the bench can i make it locked in place so it does not become separated by accident?

Yes, the locking mechanism is very robust. Looks like a thick pin with a great latch system. I'm 5' 11" and 215lbs and have been hitting the backrest pretty good on crunches - haven't broken it yet...LOL.
