Not Casually Available
You don't see an eight-volume set of anything every day; especially a boxed set of Japanese comic books labeled "For sale in the Indian subcontinent only". (These days online consumers laugh at such warnings.) But this is one of the magnum opuses of Osamu Tezuka, who reinvented comic books in Japan and for four decades rose from strength to strength and redefined the medium for the rest of the world. Tackling a sacred subject compounds the risk, but this epic manga collection deserves the name "masterpiece". Students of art, of popular culture, and those looking for a hefty but unfailingly entertaining and thoughtful read need to know that "Buddha" is available.

Books were fine, box set damaged
Item arrived on time, and all of the books were in great condition and shrink wrapped. However, the back corner of the box set showed a bit of heavy damage, most likely from the overseas shipping.

Excellent
I got one from CenturyBook, which was slightly more expensive than other seller, but came in perfect condition (I had to return one from a different seller because the boxset was torn and dirty). A must-read work for any fan of Osamu Tezuka.

Masterpiece!
I'm loving every bit of this magestic collection! Really fun and interesting if you like Tezuka's art. You don't need to be buddhist to apreciate this masterpiece of storytelling. Great deal for all 8 books, Box art looks great too!

Most underappreciated manga of its time
It's a brilliant and beautiful dramatization of the life of the Buddha (and other relevant historical figures). It's so engaging and inspiring and filled with hope and excitement and love and.... Yeah, I don't know. It's just awesome. Every part of the story is catching and fun and beautiful. I was moved by the art and story both.

Match made in heaven
Beautiful collection to add to my bookshelf. Always loved the work of Osamu Tezuka. Chip Kidd's design truely complements and completes the collection. Can't say enough!

Ik was altijd fan van de hardcovers met dezelfde print, maar deze zijn super out of print dus dit is zeker een geweldig alternatief

Breathtaking! One of the best mangas ever from the 'godfather of mangas'
Breathtaking! Had my mind & brain wrapped around this brilliant manga series last few days - of course, one doesn't need that much time to complete 8 manga volumes, but once started, I simply had to savour every bit of this great saga, well illustrated & written by the grandmaster of mangas Tezuka. To say the least, at the end, it felt like I have landed back in this world (with a thud & all that:-), straight from that turmoil filled world of Budha's times, in the centre of the love-hate politics triangle and relationship complications that existed among Kosala, Kapilavastu & Magadha regions. It is in these turbid settings that the great master had to bring in his pristinely pure teaching of compassion, of the interconnectednedd of the entire universe, of his famous tenets of 'suffering exists', 'there is a cause for suffering' and 'there is a solution out of suffering' and of his suggested eight fold path of right seeing, thinking, speech et al. A wonder journey and many 'lessons learnt' later, towards the end of the series, I, in fact, found myself wishing to restart the journey again, if at all to 'sort out' some of the jigsaw puzzle of the storyline with it's multitude of real & imaginary characters, each of whose lives kept weaving in & out of others'! Such an irreverant yet delightful treatment of a great biography, all with Tezuka's own quirks like throwing us off once in a while with his time machine tactics of fitting some modern lingo into the dialogues or with an 'untimely author's appearence', of course somehow giving all due reverence to the great master who walked this earth, his life and teachings - but for this latter bit, the series may not have been classic it is, for decades! Would not recommend for kids though, parents be warned - at max an UA rating is what one can accord to this manga when it comes to your kids. Need to mention specifically how specially delightful is the depth with which the author seems to have understood & conveyed the great master's teaching, especially in the last few volumes. One of the best mangas ever from a grandmaster - a definite must read!

Addictive, Profound, Enjoyable by all ages
I first borrowed this series from our local library and enjoyed it so much, I bought it to read again. I have now read it twice, together with my daughters (aged 5 and 9) and my 9 year old likes it so much she is reading it a third time! Word of warning to parents, there are the odd few bad words here and there, which I skipped when reading to my youngest and that ship has already sailed for my 9 year old! There is also a bit of violence and bare-chested ladies, in keeping with the historical dress of the era, but nothing gratuitous, lewd or hugely inappropriate for children - perhaps you read it first and decide if/when you can introduce it to your young ones. Where do I begin with how good it is? It is full of laugh-out-loud humour, pathos and such profound wisdom. There are so many delightful, small moments - each time you read it you find something new. You fall in love with the characters. I'm not really a graphic novel fan, mainly because I haven't found any I like as much as this one! It is quite simply perfection, from start to finish. Just get it - you won't regret it.
