I opened the reader, and repositioned the thermal pad that should be placed between card slot and heatsink (it was offplace). That's now causing enough pressure to hold the card in, but not it seems like excessive pressure and scratches the MicroSD cards. I'm very thankful for desertcart Customer Support, but I'm very unlikely to buy something else from Lexar after this.
