How and which parts of my door or doorway/frame should I measure before ordering this? What are the measurements should be?

According to the product review by "swyzlstyx": "you'll want to make sure your door frame is between 5.5 and 6 inches thick". Another reviewer says the total width of the long bar is just under 37", so I guess there has to be that much space on the non-door side of the frame, and the frame can't be more than 36" wide, and more than 18", as Brian notes.

Has anyone seen any damage to their door or wall?

I had this in my previous apartment, as someone else mentioned, I had a black line, from the rubber above the frame and in the door frame where the bar rests, this can be removed with a "magic eraser" cleaning product, (a plain old pencil eraser seems to work as well). But I also started to get some cracks on the upper right corner of the wall where the door was. Not sure if this was because of there bar (I assumed it was). For the record this was a really cheap built apartment with paper thin drywalls.

How much space is needed above the molding for the wall support bar (our ceiling is low, leaving a small gap between the door frame and the ceiling)?
