Can the width be less than 58 inches if one of the top shelves is removed?

Yes. The width is limited by the clothes rods. There is a maximum width that the clothes rod will expand. If you eliminate the clothes rods, then you have 2 free standing units with each having that weird top shelf. I order these so that I can make 2 tall shelving units with 4 shelves. I don't use the clothes rod or the top (longer) shelves. Then I have ordered wheels, so that they can be rolled around. I use one in a closet to hold tools and the other I use to hold pots and pans in a corner of the kitchen. By ordering this closet unit, I wind up paying less than if I bought 2 of the tall shelving units separately. I am limited to 4 shelves instead of 5 shelves, however.

Can anyone tell me what the measurement is between the two upright shelves, not the overall measurement. will 32" tv fit between the two?

Well the side shelves are 14 square and there are 2 so 28 - 58 to 63 is 30 to 35 inches and TX are measured on an angle.
