One of the Few Rust Removers That Lives Up to the Hype
Restoring vehicles is one of my hobbies, so Iโve tried my share of rust removers over the years. Some promise a lot and deliver very little. Evapo-Rust is one of the few products I continue to keep on the shelf because it simply works. It arrived quickly and was packaged well with no leaks or damaged container. I appreciate that itโs a ready-to-use formula, so thereโs no mixing or guessingโjust pour enough into a container to completely cover the part and let it do the work. The solution is water-based, reusable, and designed to remove rust without harsh acids or damaging unrusted metal. What I especially like is that it reaches places a wire wheel or sandblaster simply canโt. Brackets, hardware, bolts, and smaller automotive parts come out looking dramatically better with very little effort. Itโs become a regular part of how I prepare pieces before refinishing or painting. As with any restoration project, the preparation and the finishing steps matter just as much as removing the rust. Once the part is clean and dry, I always follow up with the appropriate coating to keep corrosion from returning. If youโre restoring classic vehicles, maintaining older equipment, or just trying to save original parts instead of replacing them, this is one of those products thatโs worth having in the garage. #FoundItOnAmazon #EvapoRust #RustRemoval #AutomotiveRestoration #Jeep #GarageLife #CollectorVehicles #DIY #AmazonFinds #LuxeLife

It works!
This stuff works really well on surface rust. Iโve used it, and reused it, and it does a great job of converting (or removing? Not sure which) rust. It takes a while (Iโve left pieces in it overnight) but itโs well worth it. I bought a small container initially but bought a larger size because itโs so good. It obviously canโt fix severely corroded metal, thatโs not what itโs for.

Make sure you wash out gas tanks before using!
Originally I bought a 3.5 gallon bucket of this stuff to de-rust in the inside of my motorcycle tank. The website says to wash any grease/oil and dirt. off of the parts you're going to soak, but after draining the gas from my tank and letting it sit for a day, I forgot to wash the tank out. I filled the tank with Evapo-rust and let it sit for approximately 24 hours and when I checked it it hadn't done anything. I contacted the manufacturer via their website contact form and received a reply that any amount of gasoline would screw up the Ph and cause evapo-rust not to work properly. So that was around $60 down the drain since it apparently ruins the product. It doesn't mention this in the directions I'd read on the website. This time around I soaked it with dish soap 3 times, rinsing it out 3 or 4 times after each soak. I'll update this review once I see how it works this time. **UPDATE** Ok, so I've had my tank soaking for one week and one day and this stuff is doing the job. It's taking awhile, but one of the reasons I decided to go with this stuff was that it only eats the rust and will not affect the metal. I didn't want to have to babysit my tank through the rust removal processes, so being able to forget about it for a couple of days was ideal for me. I think it probably would have worked faster had I drained the product, rinsed the tank, and replaced the product every day. The instructions tell you you may need to rinse your part and resoak to remove a film that might prevent further penetration into the rust. The instructions indicate that heavy rust might need at least an over night soaking, and while I didn't think mine would be considered "heavy" rust, it certainly wasn't light rust. Now that the rust is pretty much gone, there's pretty decent pitting in the metal in there. I wound up buying another gallon locally (total 3 gallons) because I have no way of telling if all the rust is removed aside from what I can see through the filler hole. I would recommend getting enough of this product that will at least mostly fill your tank to minimize how many different positions you have to leave the tank setting. I really want to find something heavily rusted that I can drop into the solution so I can better see the progress. That and it's a bit of a pain draining it out of the tank, rinsing it out thoroughly, and then pouring the product back in. I also filtered the product through a t-shirt each time I drained it out of the tank to remove the little bits of rust that came out. This stuff definitely does a good job and it's safe to use and won't eat anything but the rust. I wasn't concerned about this because I'm getting a dent fixed and getting it repainted, but it doesn't appear to harm the paint at all. I have spilled this stuff a decent amount though this process and aside from making your hands a little sticky, it's easy to work with. If you're in a hurry this might not be the product for you unless your dealing with really light rust, but if you're like me and want something that you can "set and forget" it will work for you. I waited until winter so I wouldn't have to go without riding my bike for the repairs, so this was a perfect solution for me.

Works great! Much better than vinegar. No scrubbing and won't eat base metal.
This stuff is brilliant for rusty steel, better than white vinegar. I had bolts and bicycle parts that were basically clean, but pretty well rusted. No caked on grease or dirt, a good layer of rust but not caked up thick. I put them in a plastic container of this stuff. It dissolves the rust into the solution, so no wire brushing needed unless the part is covered in gunk. It takes a while. I did the first screw in an ultrasonic cleaner and they were done in an hour. I put the more complicated parts with deep sockets into a container of this and let it soak for a couple of days, they came out beautiful! Depending on the steel it will either come up clean or have a gray/black conversion coating. Great for screws/tools, the conversion coating helps hold oil to prevent future rusting. It won't eat the base metal. Rusty pliers could sit in this for a month, the rust will dissolve but the pliers won't have any pitting except for what the rust did. I wouldn't use it on my antique rifle, because the color might turn, but it's great for general purpose stuff like tools and hardware.

Great for older automotive parts
This stuff worked great. We have an old boat that we needed to clean rust out of the engine. we let this sit overnight and it really cleaned the rust and crude out of it, Great for older automotive parts. We even strained the formula and did a second application. Would recommend and buy this again if I had the need.

Excellent Product!
My first project was to de-rust a part (burner assembly) from an old rusty, abused Coleman lantern. I first used a small wire brush to remove the flaky rust. After soaking for two days, most of the remaining rust had been removed. Another quick application of the wire brush and another overnight soak removed the last of the rust, leaving only shiny metal. The burner assembly was so badly damaged by rust, it was not a candidate for putting back into service, so I left the part soaking for several more days just to see what would happen. Since Evapo-Rust is not acidic, it performed as claimed - meaning it did not affect the remaining intact metal. Before trying this product, I would have used elecectrolysis - which also does a very good job of removing only rust from metal pieces. In comparison, the disadvantage of electrolysis is that it attacks rust by line-of-sight. So, if a rusty surface is not facing an electrode this process will do a poor job of removing the rust. That means nooks, crannies and the insides of tubes and such will also not be affected. -- Evapo-Rust does not have these limitations. Flash Rust (I've seen this when using electrolysis.) After removing surface rust, some steel will quickly develop a very light coat of rust after removing it from the Evapo-Rust. To prevent this, I've read recommendations saying the part should be immediately rinsed and dried after the Evapo-Rust bath, and then sprayed with WD-40, or you can apply a light coat of oil. Another recommendation I read was to spray the metal with a phosphoric acid solution, and let it air dry before painting, if that was the plan. Phosphoric acid is easy to find in hardware stores, sold as a rust remover in spray bottles. Carbon Leech Steel contains carbon and de-rusting can sometimes bring carbon to the surface after treatment, leaving a very thin black surface coating. I have yet to encounter this, but apparently it depends on the carbon content of the steel. If you see this, the recommendation is to use fine steel wool or a wire brush to remove it. A little expensive, but it's re-usable - until it loses its effectiveness. Also, according to other reviews, keep it covered as it will evaporate. So far, I'm very impressed with Evapo-Rust.

Took me 2 years to bite the bullet. I'm convinced and buying a 2nd gallon right now.
I've been working on restoring motorcycles in my spare time for a number of years and watched a lot of youtube videos of folks using MetalRescue, electrolysis, vinegar and then, for some reason, I stumbled upon a video of EvapoRust. I'd never heard of it. I thought maybe it was a knockoff of MetalRescue as it was $10 cheaper for a gallon. I thought it probably wouldn't work as well as the videos I've been watching but found $17 a gallon a little easier to part with. Well let me tell you I've been dipping motorcycle parts in there with the rubber still on them, stickers on them, paint on them, chrome on them. This stuff leaves all that alone and takes the rust right off. Places where the paint has been chipped or flaked off and replaced with rust was right down to bare-a@$ metal. Unbelievable. I've used this gallon multiple times and while it's still working I'm thinking it may be time for a fresh batch. I've used this on a corroded-as-all-get-out battery tray, coil bracket, bolts, screws, headlight shell, side covers, even a seat pan! That's a lot for one gallon to handle and it's still going. I want to do a tank so I think the extra gallon will help with coverage. I don't know if they have a 5 gallon bucket but that might be the way to go. Originally this stuff was sort of a light iced-tea color, it has darkened considerably since, I imagine that's the iron content in the water, it's definitely a darker brownish red at this point. I'm pretty careful to let it sit for a while before I pour it back into the original jug and I let all the grit sit at the bottom to get rinsed down the sink. This stuff has a smell to it that is pretty low-key, non toxic... almost like soap. I find the more I use it the less I look forward to that smell though. Small price to pay. Once the stuff has been removed from the solution I run it under my faucet with hot water. I use a brush or my thumb to brush away the dark residue and I'm left with a nice, even, grey metal color that takes a swipe or two with some 00 steel wool to put a little shine on. I hit it with some matte clear coat and install on the bike. Oh, one other thing. I was really worried about flash rusting. It hasn't been a problem yet and some of my pieces I've left for two days after treatment. I find that if I rinse with REALLY hot water it tends to evaporate rather quickly and there's nothing left on the metal to rust. Granted it's winter and the air is very dry. I may have different luck in the summer but right now I'm loving it. This stuff is amazing. It seems to leave the metal with a rough texture (hence the 00 steel wool) but I think that's because of what the rust has done to the original surface. Like I said, one or two swipes and I actually get it to shine. If you don't want the shine, don't steel wool it.

Good value for the money.
I have always been sceptical of rust remover's as there is a lot out of them out there that don't work like just spray on or brush this one on the other hand is a twelve hour soak and it does work.

Worked Great for Removing Rust from an Old Brake Caliper
I used this today to remove rust from an old, rusty brake caliper, and it worked extremely well. For the best results, I recommend preparing the part first. I brushed the caliper thoroughly with a wire brush to remove loose rust and debris. Then, if you have the time, wash it with water and a very diluted dish soap using a regular brush or an old toothbrush. Rinse it well and let it dry completely. After that, I applied the Evapo-Rust to the caliper with a brush and let it sit for a few minutes. Then I cleaned the part with brake cleaner and let it dry completely. The results were excellent. The old rusty caliper came out looking much cleaner and ready for painting. Iโm very happy with how well this product worked for rust removal.
