Born in Oakland, California, the American underground hip hop MC Del tha Funkee Homosapien is the cousin of seminal west coast rapper Ice Cube, and began his career writing lyrics for Ice Cube's group, Da Lench Mob. In 1991, with the help of Ice Cube (also as executive producer), Del released his debut solo album I Wish My Brother George Was Here at the age of 18. The album was a commercial success largely due to the popularity of the hit single 'Mistadobalina'. The title I Wish My Brother George Was Here is a reference to George Clinton, whose music was an influence on Del, as well as to the late pianist Liberace who would on occasion openly pine for his brother George to appear on Liberace's television program in the mid-50s. Growing Pains
Let's get one thing straight--"I Wish My Brother George Was Here" is a very good album by arguably the best talent in hip hop, and I'd recommend it to most people. That said, this is far from the best work that Del has ever done, and it probably needs to be recognized as such. There's no doubt in my mind that the funk infusion that permeates the CD is an asset to it, but unfortunately the production of the album leaves Del's vocals floating somewhere in the middle of the finished product, rather than out in front where they belong. One of Del's greatest assets as a performer is his flow, and he sounds noticeably cut off and awkward at several points throughout this disc, and his normally amazing vocabulary remains somewhat pedestrian and unremarkable. While it's still a wonderful example of old-school hip hop transitioning into the nineties, as far as Del albums go, you can find better performances.
