how much tea should be used to brew an 8 oz cup. the package says 50 grams per 16.9 oz. but that can't be right. is this tea really that weak?

I used a French press. In it I put 2 tablespoons of tea with about 16 oz. of water. Of course how long you let it sit makes a difference but in my case it steeped for about 4 minutes and then pushed the plunger down. It was actually a little strong for my taste but close to just right.

What are the ingredients besides the yerba mate? one reviewer mentioned sugar. do you add additional caffeine from green tea or other sources?

This item - only pure Yerba Mate; this mix of the Yerba Mate includes 'leaf stems' (con palo). There is no added sugar, nor sugar to speak of in leaf and stem and there is no reason to add caffeine. The caffeine content is less than coffee and more like tea, about 40mg/8oz infusion (of course caffeine content for non-decaffeinated infusions (Mate or Teas) depends on brewing time, leaf type, and leaf preparation (e.g., roasting, decaffeinating, etc.) similar to how different coffee beans, grinds, and brewing vary the caffeine in coffee. Still, in general, a cup of Yerba Mate ranks between coffees and teas in caffeine.
