About the Artist Karl Richter’s interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach’s choral masterworks are landmarks in the history of recorded music. When they were first issued in the 1950s and 1960s they documented a completely fresh style of interpreting this great composer’s music, far away from the Romantic tradition that was then dominating. Against the background of dramatic shifts in Baroque performance practice, Richter remained steadfast to his own tenets of strict tempi and expressive intensity. His was a ''de-romanticized'' Bach that brought a new vitality to the works and reduced the number of performing musicians to correspond more closely to the composer's original forces and which devoted much attention to the woodwinds and to balance. For many music lovers, Karl Richter remains above all a charismatic choral conductor whose recordings of Bach’s great Passions, Cantatas and B Minor Mass left their mark on an entire generation across the world; an impact due not least to the very specific sound of his Munich Bach Choir. Much-needed rescue from the new orthodoxies

*by A***E on Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2017*

I already owned several of the recordings contained in this new box set, together with the various cantata series recorded by Richter for Deutsche Grammophon Archiv. Over the years I had relegated them to the background of my Bach listening, convinced as I was that Gardiner, Koopman, Suzuki, Kuijken, and others of the historically-informed-performance practitioners understood Bach better than the pre-Harnoncourt/Leonhardt conductors like Karl Richter. But I was drawn to buy this set for some reason. What a revelation!First, the sound. The remastering is up to DGG's current high standards. The recordings have all the warmth and transparency lacking in their previous CD incarnations. Only the beginning of the St. John Passion struck me as rather abrasive; but maybe that was an intentional effect desired by Richter and recording engineers. Richter's tempos are often slow, and will upset listeners used to the quick routines of the h-i-p practitioners. Sometimes they're too slow, but for the most part they convey the deep religious sentiment of Richter and his performers. These are indeed sacred works in the hands of Richter - not exercises in speculative reconstructions and experiments in quick, unemotional singing. The range of interpretation that Richter's singers brought to the words is astonishing. The St. Matthew Passion is certainly the highlight, and it has never sounded better. The singers are all outstanding, not one single weak link. The St. John Passion almost as great. The Christmas Oratorio, a performance for the ages - four great singers and Maurice André on lead trumpet, magnificent. The Magnificat and the Mass in B minor, sung by the same singers who made the Matthew Passion a performance for the ages. They and Richter and his orchestra and chorus performed these two Latin works with the same beauty of tone and seriousness. The blu-ray audio disc brings together all the works on the separate CDs in sound that adds even more warmth and clarity than what we hear on the CDs. The DVD performances date from 1969 to 1971 and are of a different quality than the audio recordings on the CDs, which date from 1958 to 1965. The video performances will not win anyone over to Richter. I prefer those earlier audio recordings. The booklet is excellent, with essays in German and English, full texts and translations, and many black and white photos. The new orthodoxies promoted by the historically-informed-performance practitioners will endure, and I certainly will continue to appreciate what they bring to Bach. But Richter reminds us that there is another way of performing these great works. I needed this rescue from the new orthodoxies. This box set presents Richter's approach in the best possible sound. Thank you DGG Archiv for this quality release. I highly recommend it. Listen with plenty heart and an open mind, and you might not be as thrilled at Gardiner, Koopman, Kuijken and the rest of the new high priests.
