Many instructors of microeconomic theory have been waiting for a text that provides balanced and in-depth analysis of the essentials of microeconomics. Masterfully combining the results of years of teaching microeconomics at Harvard, Andreu Mas-Colell, Michael Whinston, and Jerry Green have filled that conspicuous vacancy with their groundbreaking text, Microeconomic Theory. The authors set out to create a solid organizational foundation upon which to build the effective teaching tool for microeconomic theory--the result presents unprecedented depth of coverage in all the essential topics, while allowing professors to "tailor-make" their course to suit personal priorities and style. Topics such as noncooperative game theory, information economics, mechanism design, and general equilibrium under uncertainty receive the attention that reflects their stature within the discipline. The authors devote an entire section to game theory alone, making it "free-standing" to allow instructors to return to it throughout the course when convenient. Discussion is clear, accessible, and engaging, enabling the student to gradually acquire confidence as well as proficiency.Extensive exercises within each chapter help students to hone their skills, while the text's appendix of terms, fully cross-referenced throughout the previous five sections, offers an accessible guide to the subject matter's terminology. Teachers of microeconomics need no longer rely upon scattered lecture notes to supplement their textbooks. Deftly written by three of the field's most influential scholars, Microeconomic Theory brings the readability, comprehensiveness, and versatility to the first-year graduate classroom that has long been missing. Review: The best graduate micro text - I used this for studying masters and phd level micro theory classes and found it to be the best text book among the ones on offer. In particular the sections on adverse selection, moral hazard and mechanism design are very easy to follow with a good combination of diagrams, mathematical proofs and written explanations. Review: Five Stars - The cover is not the same, but the content is page by page exactly the same.

Classic
I've resisted buying this book as it seems unnecessarily technical for all but the most dedicated mathematical economists at a post-graduate level. However, it does cover a lot of material thoroughly and I often use it as a reference, although I wouldn't recommend it as a main textbook in a course. Also, it is now somewhat outdated with very little coverage of interesting areas in microeconomic theory such as behavioral models. Someone should write an alternative textbook aimed at this level! Other available books (such as Rubinstein, Jehle and Reny, or Gravelle and Rees) although better written and more easily approachable, are not nearly as complete.

nearly great
It's generally clear and easy to understand, however, at times it goes off the deep end, particularity when it starts with the maths. Brush up on your pure maths skills before starting. Answers to the questions would be great. In addition, some indication of how to start the questions would be helpful - most of them seem unconnected to the chapter they're in, requiring random knowledge of prior maths and economics.

disclaimer: potentially irrelevant information
I like the book, it's certainly rigorous and explains the concepts reasonably well, at an advanced level. I have little to add to the other reviewers' comments on that. I'd like to add that this textbook is definitely the most carefully produced I own. Even though it's in its first ed. there are very few typos. More importantly, the layout is very convincing. Even complex graphs are are clearly and beautifully drawn, the typesetting is 100% consistent throughout the book. OK, you might say what the heck? But I regrettably have to admit that I currently spend as much time with "MWG" as with my girlfriend. So, I learnt to appreciate that it looks as good as she does (in relative terms: for a book compared to other books as her compared to other women, that is). All of you who still remember Greene's 4th ed (the blue letters...) will agree with me that a well-produced book is something to which some attention should be paid!

A Comprehensive and Challenging Textbook
This is a comprehensive and rigorous textbook in the field of microeconomics. As a graduate student, I had the opportunity to use this book in a core microeconomics course and can attest to the challenging yet rewarding experience it provided. The book provides a thorough treatment of microeconomic concepts, including classical and modern approaches to the subject. The writing style is clear and concise, making the material accessible to advanced students, although the mathematical models and techniques used to illustrate key concepts can be challenging. One of the standout features of the book is its use of mathematical models and techniques to illustrate key concepts in microeconomics. The mathematical treatment is thorough and well-explained, making it an ideal resource for those looking to deepen their understanding of the subject. Working through the problems with my classmates was a challenging yet rewarding experience that I have fond memories of. The book is well-supported by examples, exercises, and further reading, making it a valuable reference for students. I would recommend the book to graduate students in economics or related fields who are looking for a comprehensive and challenging textbook. The book's rigorous mathematical treatment and clear writing style make it an excellent resource for anyone looking to gain a deeper understanding of microeconomics. It may also be of value to professionals in the field who want to brush up on the subject. Overall, I believe this book is an essential resource for anyone studying microeconomics and will provide a challenging yet rewarding experience.
