I put some warm water in a bowl and add some of the cleaner then get a small sponge and dip it in. Then squeeze most of the water out so it is mainly foam on the sponge. Give the spill a good rub and then leave to dry and vacuum. The small samples that came with the machine, Rug Doctor, Vax, some cheap stuff off here that was £15 for 5 litres. This stuff is the best. The cheap stuff was rubbish despite the positive reviews leaving dirty brush marks on my carpet, the Vax stuff was the best of them, but created too much foam in the dirty water tank. The foam would start spraying out of the vents. The tank had to be emptied more frequently, and was a real pain. This stuff is quite a bit cheaper, cleans better than all of them, smells better and creates minimal foaming compared to the rest, so I don't have to empty the dirty water tank as much.
