How does it hold up in snow?

It won't sustain a light snow load. We had 2" of snow and the supports between the side walls and the ridge pole all bent. Also the welds that hold the feet onto the uprights broke loose. I had a similar canopy for 20 years that never had an issue even in heavier snows. The metal part is not as heavy as even the parts of a chain link fence.

do you sell a replacement canopy

Don't waste your time buying a new canopy. Get yourself a 7 mil or 11 mil tarp and secure it with zip ties. The tarps will last at least twice as long (or longer with 14 mil tarps) and a 12x20 tarp will fit nice and snug. Just make sure to only secure the zip ties with 1 click until you get them connected all the way around before you tighten otherwise you will pull it a bit too far to one side to reach. The tarps rarely flap in the breeze but you do lose the bit of overhang on the edges.

Is it possible to cut this down to half its size?

Partially. I cut my canopy down to 10' x 16' . Shorten the length poles from 10' to 8'. The excess of the cover folds easily on the ends.. Works great. Handles the snow load better.

will this be good enough for summers in california to shade a large play area for my kids? I only plan on using it during summers not year round

Yes, it is a good enough shade. I use it to shade my animals. It has to be bolted to ground or embedded in cement if you have high winds.
