Is the adhesive permanent and hard to remove or are they like 3m command strips that remove easily without leaving glue on my monitor? thanks

It's super easy to remove.. I've had mine for so long the adhesive stop working. .. I used 3mm to keep using them. I love them

Why not use magnets to hold them on the screen?

Because screen / frame is plastic or a metal that magnets don’t “stick” to

Can these free hang or do they need to use the desk to keep them stable? I ask because my computer screens are mounted and are up high from my desk

The don’t hang free very well at all. I have my monitors raised and could not use then there. Attached to the side of my printer that’s within reach.

Would they hold tape?

These would not even hold a couple of pens for me. If you want them to stay on you will need to find your own adhesive and not use whatever tape they have pre adhered to the plastic.
