    JoyoJP-05 Review / First Impressions

*by R***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2019*

I own mostly cheap pedals, most under $40. I was using a single "wall-wart" style power supply with the included daisy-chain connector. I was getting a lot of noise from my pedals, even when using only a single pedal with my power supply.I figured that most of the noise was due to my low-quality pedals, but now I know that's not true ever since I bought this PSU. I didn't buy this unit to eliminate noise, I bought it because I frequently play outdoors with a battery powered amp, and I wanted a pedal PSU that I could use without being plugged it.None of the marketing mentions if the outputs are isolated, but the box DOES say that it has 8 ISOLATED outputs, so take that with a grain of salt. I was blown away after my first use of the product. ALL of the buzz and noise I had been experiencing has been eliminated. For the first time, I'm able to plug in all 8 of the pedals I own without any noise or buzz other than the normal 60 cycle hum usually associated with a single coil guitar.I've played a couple of nights with this PSU. It seems to handle about 4 hours of play with 3-4 pedals constantly on before the power indicator light changes from green to yellow - so it can definitely handle a full playing session without draining the battery.I'm super impressed so far. I'll update if anything changes.

Good idea but there can be some issues.

I have this power supply, the Volto and the Box King. The latter two have been on my boards for a while. Love them but like the Joyo, there's a couple things you need to be aware of.I was making another pedalboard and wanted to include my Strymon Timeline and the Big sky. They both need 300ma of power. I thought, with the 3 500ma outputs that this would be the answer. When I power any one of the Strymon's and anything else (as little as one other pedal), I get a rhythmic tone out of my amp that will not go away. After several different attempts, I found I could use the Joyo to power one Strymon pedal but nothing else. I guess the circuitry is wired in such a way that it's like daisy chaining the pedals off of one line. That works sometimes but too many add noise. What Ive done now is powered the Strymon's each with their own individual batteries then use the Joyo for the rest of the lighter draw pedals. Lots of buttons to press and multiple units to charge but now I have a clean-noise free set-up.

lower-than-required max mA rating, may end up with a burnt out or overheating Joy battery

The product, Joyo JP-05, is described clearly as a "7.4v/4400mAh rechargeable lithium battery pack" or 7.4v, 4.4A. The wall wart produces 9v, 2A to the charging jack that makes a circuit to a double cylinder wrapped battery pkg. The interior PCB circuit lines look as TINY as possible and there seems to be a lot of negative space on the small board. The Joyo JP-05 PCB looks like pretty globalization but it is very underwhelming in practice. A dense little brick. One could use it as a weapon and clock someone in the head with it.What I imagine is that there is a DC-DC convertor circuit based on a single capacitor for each outlet supply jack. This includes the "switchable to 9v, 12v or 18v at 100ma" outlet. The design choices of supplying 100mA and 500mA may seem like good ideas for delivering long battery life with a lower retail price. I disagree. I would prefer a more robust battery base and 1000mA outlets. As a guitar player, as a consumer, I would be better served by a battery that is switchable to 9v, 12v or 18v at 5-10A.I have 12v and 18v pedals BUT NOT ONE of those pedals are anywhere as low is 100mA or 0.1A. Therefore, this switchable jack is unused. It does nothing for me but catch sweat..My fault, caveat emptor. I should have read the text posted by the seller better.I should have hauled out all of my pedals and charted how much power each greedy, little pedal needs. Again, my fault and hey diddle, diddle.According to the included paper, the Line6 DL4 Delay Stompbox Modeler maxs at 12v DC, 1200mA. The Line6 optional wall warts are 12vDC, 1A.Some lithium battery safety that I have read suggests a lower-than-required max mA rating may overheat/damage the battery if you power something like what a DL4 pedal may need. I want to imagine it is like too many plugs on one outlet.Use goog to search for issues with Samsung lithium batteries in 2016. You can decide if worst case, overheating scenarios are comparable...According to Fulltone, some pedals require 9vDC, 800mA. Clyde Deluxe does not specify mA, just center-pin neg. I think the older Fulltone power supplies were 200mA.Lovetone Meatball does not specify mA either. The newer Roland/Boss power adapters have 2A output and older ACI/ACB versions for something like a RC-50 power supply are rated at 1A.It would be cool to use a Joyo battery to power a Yamaha RY-20 but that requires a 12vDC, 700mA.I guess to find out what a pedal draws one might buy a Fluke 771 Milliamp Process Clamp Meter for, as of 2019.08.01, 638.+tax.I saved money buying the mid-priced Joyo JP-05 but its use is limited for me and I need tools I do not have to make sure I do not damage a rare and expensive pedal or a boutique amp... If I used Boss, DOD, Zoom, or Dunlop priced pedals, the Joyo JP-05 might make more sense but I don't know what those pedals need.I definitely have remorse for buying this Joyo JP-05 pedal power. I wish I had produced more research and thought things through more reasonably. Maybe I will return it. Maybe I will keep it for science and circuit bending...Caveat emptor.
