Anyone thinking of buying this pack needs to understand that it has only one purpose: to comply as cheaply as possible with the International Lifesaving Appliances Code. This says that by law, ships' lifeboats and liferafts need to have 10,000kJ of "food" per person. Also, since it costs money to go round replacing rations all the time, ship operators want them to last as long as possible. And finally, everyone involved knows that they're very unlikely to be used, because large ships rarely sink nowadays, and when they do the crew are generally either killed immediately or rescued very quickly thanks to modern communications. So, the sole requirements are 1) 10,000kJ 2) long life 3) fairly low cost when bought in bulk. That's it, they meet that, and that's all they do.All of this is a very roundabout way of saying that these are not "camping food", they're not especially good for hiking, and they don't taste particularly good (though they're not terrible). You can buy better products for all of these things. Only buy these if you don't expect to ever need to eat them - as designed, in an emergency that probably won't ever happen.

One Pack ( 500 grams) contains 2500 Kcal and is said to be enough for 72 hours (3 days). The average daily(24hours) recommended is 2500Kcal?

Two things about that: 1. If you're in a lifeboat, you're not using as much energy as usual. 800-odd calories a day is enough to keep you functional (able to fire flares, etc.), although you will lose weight as your body supplements the low calorie intake by burning fat. 2. If you eat an entire box of these in one day and nothing else, you'll probably get a truly amazing case of constipation. It's recommended that if you want more than 800 calories a day, you should use these emergency biscuits as a supplement to stretch out some other food source.

How long is the use by or shelf life?

Does anyone know exactly? Can the supplier answer this? Rice and things in supermarkets often have 3 years life, so these don't sound very long life?
