Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) + Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) - Obsidian

Easy to set up and easy to live with. The interface is straightforward enough that anyone in the house can adjust it without asking how, and the app does everything you'd want from across town.The build quality stands out. The display is sharp, the dial has a solid, precise feel to it, and the finish looks like a piece of hardware rather than a plastic box on the wall. The Obsidian color blends in well.The included temperature sensor is a real addition, not a throw-in — it lets you prioritize the room you actually care about instead of whatever room the thermostat happens to be in.Worth what it costs. No complaints.

Three reasons I like this product:1) C-Wire: I don't have a c-wire available. There are VERY few modern smart thermostats that claim to work without one.I first tried one of the others, the Sensi. It did not have any apparent easy way to determine in advance if it would work without a c-wire. It didn't work for me. The lack of an easy advance tool cost both of us time and money; a lose/lose. A wrote a well-deserved 1 star review of that product.This product does have a very easy tool to determine in advance if it will work without a c-wire. It took me literally 10 seconds to use that tool & be confident this would work. And, it does, in fact, work great without a c-wire.2) Functionality:It comes with a remote temp sensor which is a new thing for me and a great idea. I put mine in the bedroom. It was crazy-easy to set up and I really like the simple interface letting you choose when & how you want the thermostat to use it. It says you can add more of these if you want.Programming a daily schedule is incredibly easy as is making quick adjustments to that schedule.It has all sorts of other features such as auto-adjusting based on who is home, learning your patterns & making further auto adjustments, accepting voice commands, and so on. I do not want to use any of those things. They made it very easy for me to just say "no thanks" to all of those things and still have a nice seamless experience.3) Appearance: I hesitated to buy this product because it is round while my previous thermostat was rectangular and the wall is messed up everywhere behind the area of the old thermostat. Yes, I can patch a wall and paint it - but, no, I don't really want to if I can avoid it. It was a pleasant surprise to me that this thermostat came with an optional large faceplate that is made to cover up the bad wall in exactly my situation. I used it and it is great.Privacy is a concern but that seems to come with just about everything these days so - I don't know - just get over it?I recommend this.

We’ve had earlier models of nest thermostats in the past. Decided to upgrade to the newer model after our new house shorted out our old one. This model is the best on the market imo. The style is modern and looks great. The interface looks better than ever. It always has good WiFi connectivity and is easy to use whether your adjusting settings on your phone or in person.

This thermostat has been a fantastic upgrade for my home. Installation was straightforward, the display looks great, and the included temperature sensor helps keep the rooms I use most comfortable. The smart features are easy to use and have made managing my home's temperature much more convenient. Highly recommended!

When one of our 3rd Gen Nest Thermostats stopped working, I decided to replace it with a 4th Generation Nest unit. Oddly, the mounting hardware for the 4th Generation is completely different from the 3rd Generation, which is annoying. The wiring backplate is incompatible, as the 4th Generation has a different electrical connector to the thermostat. One nice thing about the new backplate is that there is a light built into the bubble level which signals voltage on the Rh or Rc wires from the HVAC unit, implying you won't need a dedicated C wire for power. Unfortunately, this is many times not the case for the 4th Generation, lit bubble level or not.When I properly mounted and connected the 4th Generation thermostat, the setup app on my phone reported that there was "no power" on the R wire, even though the bubble level was lit, and I could measure the voltage on a multimeter. There was no way to get around the error message in the app. A call to Google support was completely useless. The support person clearly didn't know why the setup app falsely reported "no power", or whether or not the 4th Generation thermostat required higher voltage on the R wires than the 3rd Generation thermostat for operation without a C wire.An internet search revealed numerous people posting on Reddit and other web sites of the same issue I was having. How could Google support not be aware of this? Depending on your view, the difference between the R wire voltage requirements for the 4th Generation from the 3rd Generation thermostats is either an undocumented design change, or a design flaw. Personally, I consider it a significant design flaw, especially that it is not documented in the setup instructions, and there is no warning of this anywhere in Google's documentation.After spending about two hours removing the 3rd Generation mount, installing the 4th Generation mount, waiting for the callback from Google, and figuring out the root cause myself, I unmounted the 4th Generation Nest, packaged it back up, and returned it. I ordered a new 3rd Generation Nest from Amazon, and it works flawlessly with the HVAC unit.One attraction of the 4th Generation Nest is that the "maintenance band", the temperature variance range at which the AC compressor cycles on and off, is manually programmable, while on the 3rd Generation Nest it is not. There have been complaints that the 3rd Generation Nest's maintenance band is only two degrees F wide, which in some climates and homes cycles the compressor too often, and is blamed for excess wear and premature failure on the compressor. (AC units and heat pumps both use compressors.) So if you have a C wire in your compressor-based system, I recommend trying to use a 4th Generation Nest. Another trick which works with both generations is to use a remote sensor in a different part of the room or another room where the ambient temperature doesn't vary as quickly, to reduce compressor cycling. I use this trick for our 3rd Generation Units, and it also works for 4th Generation thermostats. Note that using a remote sensor this way may require some experimentation to get the desired result, while the feature to manually adjust the maintenance band makes it quicker and simpler.I really like the Google Nest thermostats when they're working the way they're supposed to, but the lack of backward functional capability from the 3rd Generation model to 4th Generation model is inexcusable, since there's no warning about it. And Google support is ineffective in helping less technical buyers. The least Google could do is document the issue properly on their web site.

Love this thermostat. Easy to set up and the personalization is great! It'll display the forecast and much more. Very sleek looking and goes great with my decor.

As finally a lucky homeowner, I'm able to choose my own thermostat. After looking at multiple options, from basic smart to advance smart thermostats, I've always thought the nest was the cream of the crop so went with this latest and smartest model.Instructions and installation equipment were easy to follow and install on a 1986 home. Wi-Fi connectivity and app setup, I had one hiccup if I remember, but was able to complete.I'll quick put my complaints here: one, I like it cold, but I also like energy efficiency. I often find it auto lowering the temperature past where I'd like. I'd use the Eco setting more often, but it's a tad too high. If I want it to stay at a certain temperature, I have to use the hold feature but I still want to be able to adjust it, so then I have to take it off hold. So far it hasn't exactly been learning accurately after about 4 or 5 months of use.Two, it may be fancier than really what I or most people would probably need. The ability to have room sensors is nice. Since sleep temperature is important, I keep it in the master bedroom. Smart integration with Amazon devices and the Google home app, no real problems. A decent number of settings to configure the device as well. All these features make it one of the more expensive options.Three, I mistakenly chose this not realizing it's not an energy star rated model. Not sure exactly why, but it makes it not eligible for power company rebates. This lowers the value proposition.Four, well it's easy enough to use, but not the easiest. I'm by no means technologically illiterate. What I mainly mean is changing the common settings like setting a temperature, switching between hot, cold, and hot / cold, setting a hold, setting eco and changing the temperature thresholds, all required just a little extra work versus other thermostats that have like dedicated arrow buttons. It just comes with the territory of a product designed with a minimalist interface.As for the pros, I've mentioned some. Plenty of features, working smart integration, connectivity if you're into that, sleep design, easy enough installation, and solid build quality.Would I recommend this? If you know what you want and these feature sets are truly what you desire, and price isn't too important, then yes. If you want possibly the best or most advanced, then yes.If you want a basic thermostat, or basic smart thermostat, want something that will save you money sooner than later, want something that's easy for people who don't like technology, then I would not recommend this.

After using the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat, upgrading to the 4th generation has been well worth it. The new design is a noticeable improvement, with the larger display giving it a much more modern and polished appearance on the wall. Beyond the new look, the additional features make the upgrade worthwhile. We have several Nest temperature sensors throughout the house, and I especially like having more flexibility in how those sensors can be used. Rather than simply programming around individual rooms, the ability to work with sensor groups helps provide more balanced comfort throughout the home and makes the overall HVAC setup feel more efficient.The Google Home app integration works well for controlling temperatures, schedules, and sensors in one place. The larger display and Farsight features are also useful improvements in everyday use.Installation was straightforward when replacing our existing Nest, and the included 2nd generation temperature sensor adds even more value to the package. Overall, the combination of the updated design, improved sensor management, smarter features, and better whole-home comfort makes the 4th generation Nest a meaningful upgrade rather than simply a cosmetic refresh.

Doesn't work in the UK. Even though Amazon are selling this on UK store, compatibility checker tool doesn't work either. I have a 3rd gen heatlink attachment on boiler and it just doesn't work with it. Bad craic really. Stuck with an expensive thing I can't use. Will try send back if I can.

I bought a Google Nest Thermostat from Amazon, and initially, I wasn’t sure how to install it. I contacted the supplier, Mr. Mumtaz, who was incredibly helpful. He came over and installed it for me and did such a great job that I ended up getting one more thermostat, which he also installed. The devices are now working perfectly, and I’m very satisfied with the performance. Highly recommend both the product and the excellent service!
