This thing is untouchable when it comes to price vs value. The only other boards that can do HVEC encoding and comes with an HDMI input are 2-4x the cost like the Jetson line, and/or come with stuff you don’t need. This is perfect for the use case of in the field encoding, like a IRL streamer box. I use it to stream multiple RTMP cameras wirelessly to the Orange Pi, where it encodes them and streams it to Youtube. It does so flawlessly. If you bought one of this custom IRL streaming devices you’ll be paying 3x the price of this for less powerful hardware Literally only downside is weak support for images. All that exists is a bunch of weird forks (some unsigned blobs sitting on a random google drive). I’d suggest you use the custom Ubuntu image as it’s on Github so you can at least build it and fork it yourself.

Received both of mine today, both were completely dead on arrival. I tried a dozen different images, flashed with Balena Etcher, Raspberry Pi Imager and dd to a verified-good SD card, and 4 different portable HDMI displays. Nothing at all. Dead. I also bought eMMC cards for each of them, and with those connected or not, absolutely zero video output, and only a solid red or a blinking green light. They're going back for a refund.

Installation of the os was strait forward. Keep note that you will need to try the best os with bug fixes to ensure all features of the orange pi are functioning. But you will not have to look long. This speedy little SBC is fast and is potentually faster than most alternatives of the raspberry.

Extremely poor support. Rasberry pi images dont work, going to their website, many of the images dont work or Linux Update modules point to non official repos! The arch version works for me but requires PACMAN instead of apt. Also did you notice that there is no wifi chip. Read forums to discover understand what you are getting into before you commit to this one.

Running orange pi os: arch Linux it’s works for most part. Plays1080p video without a problem but 4k and up absolutely not. Too many frame dropped. I don’t understand how they can advertise 8k but can’t even play 4k video on Orange PI OS.
