It must have been updated based on safety or customer feedback because I was prepared not to rely on the guard but mine has a very thick and safe one. This saw is a monster and has plenty of power. You simply can't beat it at this price point. I've always wanted a beam saw but they are so expensive for the name brands and are usually 10" unless you go up to the 16" Makita. This 12" size is perfect and it feels like a $250+ dollar unit. Definitely a 5 star purchase.
