It charges by USB but solar cell charging is really not very good in the light that I received. Even in direct sun, it never charges fully. In moderate sun, the battery slowly became discharged (with the light off, of course). It came with a USB cable but no instructions.Addendum: Now it doesn't hold a charge at all and solar cells have failed completely.
