Not sure how it happened other than years of working a job that put a lot of stress on my big toe, causing turf toe. I have taped for a while now but can't stand it for long periods. This brace has been very comfortable and has made a big difference. They do not fit in my shoe so I can only wear it at home. I can sleep with it on without discomfort. If you have a large foot it might not work so great.
