Our Original Jurassic Sand is neither hydrophobic or hydrophilic. Unless you are using it for some advanced scientific experiments I would say it is pretty much neutral. To know more precisely would require advanced testing . Since the grains are pure quartz crystals with a trace of iron oxide coating I know the quartz grains don't absorb water given their crystal structure. Whether the trace of iron oxide coating does attract or repel water I don't know but given the trace amounts present, it would probably negligible . Hope this helps... I also like the smooth soft feel of it. However, it barely covers the bottom of our small sandbox so in order to fill it I will have to buy at least two more bags and it is expensive. In addition, it does not mold on its own if it is dry- as it says in the description- I tried to make a simple sand mountain and it wouldn't do that even.
