Is the bristle hard or soft?

No, it’s just perfect.. not too hard, not too soft. Although I think it’s mostly suited for an adult’s scalp, as I use it for my nightly brushes to get the scalp tingling, blood moving, and cells rejuvenating. I suppose you could use it on a child’s scalp but make sure they’re at least 10 years old or a teenager and go gently. At the end of the day, it’s up to the individual. What works for one, may not work for another and vice-versa.
