Learn the Ins and Outs of Building Lapstrake, Carvel, Stitch-and-Glue, Strip-Planked, and Other Wooden Boats Whether you are contemplating your first-ever boatbuilding project or trying to decide what design you'd like to build next, Greg Rössel can help. Here's just a glimpse of what's inside this complete overview of wooden boatbuilding: How rowing, sailing, paddling, and powerboat designs perform, and how they compare in cost, time, and necessary skills for building How wooden boats are built, including the pros and cons of carvel, lapstrake, dory lap, stitch and glue, strip plank, and other methods How to choose the best boat and building method for your next project How to loft a hull, steam bend frames, scarf a joint, cut a rabbet, laminate stems, and spile planks How to take the lines off an old classic whose plans have been lost How to make oars, spars, coamings, knees, gaff jaws, cleats, and more Greg Rössel writes with warmth, wit, and an engaging style. The Boatbuilder's Apprentice is a must guide for anyone planning or even dreaming about building a wooden boat. “Greg Rössel is a Renaissance man. While there are many talented boatbuilders in the world, only a handful are also good teachers. Even fewer can write or illustrate effectively. Yet this author is highly skilled in each of these areas. . . . The Boatbuilder's Apprentice is a successful blend of technique and wisdom, and is, I believe, destined to become a classic.”-Karen Wales, WoodenBoat Review Review: Succint information for planning your first boat - Great book! I have been planning (dreaming) of building a wooden boat for a number of years. Only space and time have held me up. Now that I have both, I can begin serious research of the various methods and materials and set those dreams in motion. I have a couple other well-acclaimed books on the topic of wooden boat building, but they are focused on details of design, engineering and frame structure which is good, but they was too detailed and seemed to pass over the topics I needed to understand planking and such. This book was perfect. The author had separate chapters on each planking method as well as a rather exhaustive explanation and illustrations on the crucial task of lofting and steaming the frames. I wish I had bought this book first. I could have started my dream sooner and with confidence. If you want a good, useful overview of wooden boat building, start with this book. Review: good for research - Got this book for my husband at Christmas. He's always wanted to build a wood boat and he wanted several books to gather information and opinions. This was one of two. My husband really liked the information and photos in this book. It arrived quickly and in good condition with some other items I had ordered. It was not wrapped or protected, but it made it. I will update with any further thoughts my husband might add

detailed boat carpentry- past just caulking abd painting a boat.
Rossel explains all the 'stuff' that goes IN the hull- not just the hull itself. His depth of Marine Carpentry is well laid out here, to be shared by anyone who has to fit wood in asymmetrical situations, marine or otherwise.

Great coffee table book for work or fun
This book can be appreciated by boat builders and do it your selfers. It has great photos, historical and practical information. Definatly a coffee table book for any one who enjoys any wood working craftsmanship. This book helped me build a Lap Strake dingy. It was a better resource than the instruction book that came with the template paterns I purchased to build my dingy.

A great beginners reference
A ton of info crammed into one book. While it doesn't cover everything, it is a jump point to learning. It gives a good reference to different syles and methods.

An excellent alround book
I've really enjoyed reading this book. Open it on any page and you'll find something interesting and informative. There are lots of good tips and advice, the black and white pictures didn't bother me unlike some reviewers. The pictures all tell a story and there age doesn't really matter. If you can't see why the photo was chosen you need to look again they all illustrate some design feature, useful technique or a simple some good tools. I'm now on the hunt for some speciality clamps found in this book! The writing style is very clear and all the techniques are put in their historic/evolutionary context. This is really useful and I think gives the amateur a lot of confidence - if you want a light weight 'modern' stitch and glue boat, go for it! If you want to spend more time fine tuning some techniques then these too are covered in this book. As others have said, its not an instruction manual I'd describe it as a "inspiration manual".
