Well made, worth the money!
I've had one of the $20 basic USB microscope for a few years and have found it useful, but was frustrated by the poor quality plastic stand that it came with. That plastic stand had no stability and was a real pain to focus and use the 'scope. This nicely-made aluminum stand makes that old USB microscope MUCH more useful because of the stability, adjustbility, and smooth focus operation. While a $20 640 x 480 USB microscope along with this stand is not the equal of a $180 1900 x 1080 microscope, for a total outlay of under $40 you have something that is very usable for the hobbyist in a number of fields. I use it to read laser-etched type numbers on small solid-state electronic parts, to inspect the BGA contacts on motherboards, identify insects, and just look at tiny stuff up close. The metalwork on this stand is really quite good. The base has a little weight to it, and overall finish is better than you'd expect at this price level. I would like to add one caution: when screwing the arm into the threaded hole in the base bracket, go slowly and make sure you are not cross-threading it. I have a tendency to rush things and might have cross-threaded it if I had not slowed down a bit.

New life for USB microscope
Just got this delivered today and it looks to be another wonder of CNC milling techniques that makes something like this inexpensive and well-made. The fit and finish are excellent, It went together easily, fits my USB "microscope" perfectly and securely and has a smooth action that will allow close focusing. The microscope was more of a curiosity than a useful tool because of the poor stability of the stand that it came with...potential but frustratingly unreachable due to instability. This will allow adjusting of lighting, magnification and focus without disturbing the object under study. I bought the USB "microscope" with the idea of using it as a fine soldering aid but that was a false hope due to the instability. I was able to "jury rig" a stand but it was shaky and hard to focus I tried several years later to examine the stylus tip of my stereo cartridge and sort of succeeded...at least I could see the accumulated dust and crap and removing that improved my sound quite a bit. I haven't gotten back to that yet but the much improved stability promises to be a big assist. The only "con" I can see is the little bit of slop in the focus pinion on the rack. If that were gone, it would be perfect, but it does not translate to motion of the scope so it is not a big deal.

If you have a USB scope you NEED something like this.
USB 'microscopes' are very handy things to have for taking a look at small things. But the terrible stands they all come with (as seen in one of my pics with the big red X) just cripple the scopes. They need to be held perfectly still, and at a perfect distance for a specific zoom. If your scope wobbles, the stand doesn't grip the scope well, or is so short you can't get the scope a decent distance from the subject then you're not getting good pictures. This stand is cheap and solid enough - it even fits the very fat Bysameyee 4K scope I bought, seen in the second picture. You just stick the scope in there, use the two screws around the ring to hold it, then use the screw on the left to loosen the grip on the left column, set the height where you need it, gently tighten the screw, and you're done! This stand goes high enough you can get most things you'll want to take a look at underneath the scope. You might think it's bad that the only axis is vertical, but it's not - all these scopes need the bottom of the scope to be perpendicular to the subject, so tilting is worse than useless. If somehow you need to use the scope on something vertical or tilted, well, you'll have to go back to the crappy old stand. Or you could also get a stand that works like an extensible light stand and gives you six degrees of freedom, but be warned those vibrate a lot and change your distance while rotating the zoom collar, which is also bad for your images. Tradeoffs! But for the price this does exactly what I need. It even comes with a little clamshell zipper case - it will only hold the stand and scope if you break the base down (unscrew the base), but it's certainly better than the box the scope came in.

Necessary accessory for the little USB microscopes.
This little stand is awesome. It's very helpful for focusing in on what you're looking at. It's way more stable than holding the microscope camera, or the lame little mount they include. That's the point I guess! The circle dials on the side make it really easy to focus. The knob on the back tightens or loosens the tension for the microscope holder. The camera mount uses little tension knobs to keep it in place, which works well with enough room to access to the "zoom" function on the camera. It's worth the price for sure. I really like it. I've been geeking out over it, and that makes my kids get excited too :) We started using black construction paper to move around the little things we're looking at. That works amazingly well. Also, keep in mind, it's a $20 accessory. Expectations need to stay in check. The tolerances aren't great. it's not a precision unit. Gripes: 1. The color of the base is silver... I'm going to be painting it black (if I care enough. I'm not sure yet). It causes the image to become overexposed if the item we are looking at doesn't fill the frame enough. Our fix was to use the black construction paper, which turns out to also be very convenient for moving the item around. I know it probably wouldn't look as cool, but it would function better if it was black anodized instead of the silver finish it has. 2. Why did they make the arm that goes from the base plate to the vertical pole so thin? It flexes when you use the little knobs on the side.

Quality is impressive
I bought this to go with my cheap USB microscope that came with a plastic stand. You know the type I'm talking about - the one that would be a decent microscope if it had a decent stand. Anyway, this new stand is fantastic! The design is awesome. I'm especially impressed by the build quality. It's all aluminum, and stays where you put it. I grips the microscope tightly but won't scar the case, because the thumbscrews have rubber tips on them. I can adjust the focus without moving the field of view now, which is something I was never able to do with the original stand. I'm not sure about the fancy case. It's a very nice case, also high quality, but you have to disassemble the stand to use it. If I were traveling with my microscope, I might. I'm surprised you can get such a useful and high-quality device for only 20 bucks. Good job, guys!

Smooth & portable
Stand is a must-have for any USB microscope owner. I was wary about quality given the price, but my expectations were blown away. - Solid all metal construction, except for the exact places you dont want metal: The feet are hard rubber, the knob in the back that locks the height presses onto a plastic slide - you can set it to provide smooth friction during focus adjustment, which works perfectly. The bolts that clamp onto the scope are plastic-tipped to avoid marring but still grip the scope tight. - The stand can be rotated and locked into other positions relative to the base. This is helpful to look at immobile large objects (see my attachment, have it rotated to see below the stand). - Adjustment knob is 'fine enough' unless you get into really high zooms - rack is 1.90mm pitch, seems to have a 10-tooth pinion, giving 19mm movement per full rotation. Theres continuous smooth motion, no steps or jittering as you adjust. With the locking knob providing friction it's reasonably easy to move it only ~50um at a time. At very high zooms my scope's depth of field is only 0.1mm so it's a little bit hard to get it perfect, but still doable.
