I decided to keep the wire and throw away the socket portion. However, for my purposes the reason for a "flat" right angle plug is to fit behind furniture next to the wall. Many similar flat plug cords I have purchased stick out just 3/8" from the wall, but this item is considerably fatter -- it sticks out a full half inch. This turned out to be too thick to fit in my applications.As far as I can tell, there is no mention of this critical plug dimension in the description -- arguably the most important spec for this type of extension cord. Also, it cannot be readily deduced from the photos.If the projection distance is of no importance to you, this is a perfectly acceptable cord.
