The second book-end to Jon Savage's hugely popular 1966 Faber book and Ace compilation and to last year's 1967 CD follow-up, this prequel double CD based around 1965 represents the lead up and context to all that was about to happen. A genre-spanning mix of hit singles, slow burners and lost gems from soul, funk, psych, garage and rock n roll, these are the 45s that defined the year, captured the mood and crystallised Jon Savage's personal memories of the year. Dylan, denim, soft drugs and political disaffection, 1965 saw the death of Churchill and the rise of civil rights. 1965 was the year the sixties ignited. Review: Hot Singles, Slow Burners, Lost Gems And More - This is a great eclectic mic of 60s music. Review: 1965- a good year for music - A great double cd of hit singles, slow burners and lost gems.

Miscellaneous tunes from 1965
I was born in the 1960s making a compilation like this immediately interesting. Bob Dylan's From A Buick 6 is a surprise, but welcome. The huge are missing, viz., The Rolling Stones and The Beatles; yet nice to hear the vagabond musician turn up here I'm all of its guises. I like garage, would have been better with a handful. The alternative hit parade? Some here are now solid mainstream such as Nowhere To Run by Martha & The Vandelas; or In The Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett. Fabulous standouts include Concrete And Clay and It's My Life. I barely recall the reality around me when perhaps hearing them for the first time. An archive here, then, curated by a music journalist who's writing includes 1966 (Faber) and England's Dreaming (about the punk beginnings of music change in 1976). Whether this compilation stays on a shelf is a question. Yet, atmospheric songs, is it 1965 now? I look forward to the next one.

Palpable excitement from a crucial pop year
In the era of endless playlists, numerous 'curated' cultural retrospectives, not to mention island-sized landfill compilations, and never mind mixtapes, where does one begin? A trusted source would combine the knowledge and insight of the historian, the sidewalk social scientist's grasp of pop political milieu, and the blazing enthusiasm of a trufan. These songs tell a story, but you can also just dance to them. Hit after hit - some canonically familiar, others belonging to another, overlooked history. Of the trilogy (to date, all great) of double disc 60s retrospectives assembled by Savage and released by Ace recordings, this, perhaps unexpectedly, carries the most thrilling charge. The excitement is palpable, an anticipation of a culture about to accelerate into high gear. The incipient feeling of explosive potential is a thrill. We know what happened next; with this CD one can time travel and experience a moment in which cultural tectonic plates began to shift, a future as yet unwritten. Inspiring. And it rocks too. I cant wait for 1964, 1968 and so on.

I bought this based on the songs I know, thinking the tracks I'm unfamiliar with would be as interesting. The first thing you should know is that this is a collection compiled from a British perspective of 60's pop, and second, it seems to be very personal choices, as it should be. But a good percentage of the tracks are one-time listens and few are just completely baffling as to why they would be included. It's not a bad collection, and I'm impressed all the tracks are in mono. The liner notes are informative and insightful and do help to explain the thought process behind each selection. Unfortunately, most of them don't live up to the enthusiastic praise. Still, you may find a handful of unknown treasures here, as I did.
