National Hardware N197-988 V1922 Flush Bolt in Solid Brass

I bought this to secure a sliding closet door in a motorhome. The soft-close mechanism was supposed to keep the door closed, but it often opened and then the closet light would come on while we were driving. It's a very nice motorhome but they've all got these little problems. If this is the biggest problem we'll ever have, then we will indeed be blessed. The mortise: Yeah, it's possible to drill and chisel out a 1/2" semicircle but probably not worth it. Instead, use a 1/2" drill bit or, even better, a 1/2" Forstner bit to drill a circular hole. The brass plate will mostly or totally cover the hole, depending on which plate you use. My our case, the bottom of the sliding door was a good 3/8" above the floor, so we needed to add a piece of wood under the plate to make sure that the latch mechanism held while bouncing down the highway. The circle was cut into that wooden piece. In our case, the included screws for the floor part were too short. We used #6 1" Power Pro screws with Torx heads. 100 of them cost about $7 at Lowes and they come with the driver bit. Attaching it to the door: Our door was slightly less than 3/4" thick. The supplied screws were too long and would have protruded through the back. We needed smaller screws. This time, we used #6 3/4" Power Pro screws. Because of the thickness of the back of the latch, they did not protrude through the back of the door. I wanted to have the latch at the lower front edge of the door. In order to be able to see where to drill, I applied some blue painters tape on the door and while holding the latch against the door, I used a black Sharpie to mark the tape where the holes were located. Then, I drilled two 3/16" holes (as recommended) at the centers of the circles, removed the tape and then screwed in the latch. Which floor plate to use: Two plates are included. Aesthetically, I liked the thin rectangular one. LOL, if you put the latch on the edge of the door and when closed it abuts a door frame, then the little rectangular plate won't work because one of its screws would have to be inside the door frame! Got it? For a French-type door, it would be fine because the latch on the top door is never at the very edge. So, that's where the other plate comes in. Its screw holes insert behind the latch area/mortise and allows it to be placed right next to the door frame, if that's what's needed, of course. Durability and quality: It appears to be fine but I haven't used it long enough to determine how it will hold up over time.

Easy to install and fit the space I had on an old door. It slides back and forth easily but it is sturdy enough to give privacy to a bathroom.

Works well, the screws hold well enough. I put this at the top of my door because my toddler can open anything she sets her mind to and we dont want her getting out and wandering off toward the road. I did have to use the flush mount option because my door isnt flush with my interior wall So it involved carving out some of the wood so that the lock can slide into place through the hole. Lining it up just right was a little frustrating since there isnt a lot of wiggle room you have to make sure the slide can go into the hole perfectly. If your house shifts during different seasons this could be an issue.

They look great and are not too hard to install. But be sure to install the plate first as it makes it easy to get them lined up better.

Love this it is a good value for money. Had an ease of installation. Fit perfect. Lockability is perfect for children to be locked out of kitchen. Durable. Weighs a good size good quality.

It's a sturdy lock but doesn't stay up in the vertical position. I'm just trying to keep a french door from swinging open, so for my purposes it worked OK. If you need to keep a door locked to keep a child out I'm sure it works well in the horizontal position but slips open in the vertical position.

This is an excellent latch. It has that "solid brass" coloring to it, and heft. Here is a helpful tip for installing it without having to mortise. That means if you remove them, you have 4 small screw-holes to fill. I mounted this in my bedrooms, where the doors swing into the room 1. Mount the slider piece to the door about 5 feet above the floor with the 2 screws provided. 2. On the casing/trim, use the little vertical one, not that larger horizontal one. a. I did NOT have to mortise it. b. Instead, I used very small steel washers (get them smaller than ½” diameter so they hide well). 3. My steps: a. I drilled my 2 mounting holes b. Put the screws through the plate c. Put 2 washers between the plate and the wood on each screw 4. This lifts the receiving plate off the wood by that thickness (under 1/16”) and lets the latch engage perfectly. 5. Is it “less secure?” Well, yes, by a few seconds. But if someone is going to kick in my door, I would rather the latch pops off before the wood is torn to chunks. By then, I definitely will have time to engage defenses! 6. My doors (105-y-o) are a bit twisted. One does not close quite tight at that height. So I used the same screws under the latch to get it to project into alignment as well. 7. If you use a small enough washer, they do not show, and you just do not even notice any gap under the latch or its plate.

Fastened this latch to a door frame to use as a lock for a recessed door. Was straight forward to install and works well. Wouldn't trust it for security but works great yo childproof/lock a recessed door.

The headline says it all. Very happy with the purchase. They look as if they would cost a lot more.
