I am so glad that YenPress is re-releasing this amazing Italian comic series that first debut back in 2002. Unlike the Disney Hyperion version, YenPress doesn't censor or change the overall translation or graphic depiction of the Guardians' transformation. As a W.I.T.C.H. fan, this is a must have! We fell in love with a comic series that is a blend of magical girls, super heroe, and contemporary fantasy adventury all in one. We love the colorful characters, both the heroes and the villains, and enjoy the story development that they each endevoured. Unlike the animated adaptation, the original W.I.T.C.H. comic is much darker and has more complex story line. The first story arc, The Twelve Portals, centers on the introduction of a new generation of Guardians; Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia, and Hay Lin discovering their new powers and their role as protectors of the universe. They must close portals between Earth and Metamoor, the home planet of their friend, Elyon, who was tricked into betraying her friends for her long lost brother, Phobos. Yet, without help or guidance, the Guardians chose to do more by helping the opressed populace of Metamoor, defeat Phobos and restory Elyon as the true Queen. Both the original comics and the animated series approached the story differently. The show is a little bit more light-hearted, and the comics more in-depth, but both were fun and enjoyable for all fans. I'm glad that YenPress is re-releasing these comics so that old fans like me can enjoy the nostalgia and for new fans to discover something new. The characters are nice to look at, unique and emotions are expressed well. Further the background art and colors used are very pleasing to the eye. The story was easy to follow and very enjoyable. I especially appreciate how teens (and adults) can relate to the friendship, sibling and parent/child relationship that is shown in the story. I found this series when I was a young teen and still enjoy it now. I find that it's very relatable and the illustration is one of the main things that inspired me to take drawing more seriously. For that reason this series will always have a special place in my heart. I think others could enjoy this story and art as well.
