how long is the battery life on this, and can i replace it myself?

I can't say exactly how long, but I can say impressively long. I think I've only charged 3 times since i got it, maybe once every month or 2?. I'm on my computer 12 -14 hours a day. As far as changing a battery, I'd say it's probably not meant to have it changed, not sure if it's possible anyway, but i don't think it's meant for that. I love this mouse.

Can the buttons be programmed?

Yes. You will download the logi software and all the buttons can be programmed to do several things. I use it for my MacBook and it works great and can do all the commands I need for Mac

Has anyone experienced this mouse not working after a couple of months?

I have not experienced any issues after a couple of months. The last one i had lasted several years.
