For example if you wanted to rip a 4K Blu Ray, which is absolutely not permitted, you would need firmware version 3.0.1. A friend of a friend of mine received a drive with 3.0.2 and was able to revert it back to 3.0.1 using a program running on a 32 bit Windows 10 Install. I can’t remember the exact program that he claimed to use but I am sure that if you were to search for ‘ASUS BW16D1HT 3.0.1 flash’ then you would be able to find a forum with all of the information that you definitely don’t need for the process that you definitely won’t do. But anyway that would allow an individual to rip 4K Blu-rays and regular Blu-ray with MakeMKV. In fact the aforementioned individual could probably rip regular Blu-Ray on any firmware version. **Q: Whats the firmware version on this drive? does it recognize (not play) 4k uhd discs?** A: The firmware version on my drive is 3.02. This version makes the drive the UHD 'friendly' and does not implement AACS2 protection, whereas the later version 3.03 make the drive 'official' which then requires the AACS2 certificate to be presented. **Q: Is it region free?** A: The drive I received was region free **Q: dose it rip blurays** A: Not sure what your ripping requirement is but the device will burn Blu-ray subject to what software you use. I use it to creat Blu-ray videos using video editing software Edius. You can open source or buy Blu-ray creation software to either back up your data or create Blu-ray video disc. I have also used with Windows and created discs using ISO files. I hope it answers your question. If you plan to duplicate a commercial Blu-ray disc, there may be inherent copyright protection.
