A device meant for tinkering, but loads of fun....
What can I say about this device, it is gloriously good and I can easily recommend it. However, if you are new to the emulation scene, and you're not exactly the type to tinker with things....then stay away, you're better off getting one of their previous handhelds as those are much more user friendly (HENCE that is Android for you).....However if you are willing to sit down one afternoon and patiently set it up, you will have a pretty solid and powerful device to play with and endless hours of fun.... If you are expecting to play stronger titles from the likes of GameCube, PS2, Wii and 3DS....then you need to subvert your expectations, this is NOT the best device to run stronger systems, you're better off spending a little more money and something much more powerful to the likes of Ayin Odin or the Steam Deck as examples (needless to say, it can run those systems, but you need to tinker a whole lot to get them running in a playable state, and if you are sensitive to frame drops, then this device isn't for you, the hardware simply isn't powerful enough to handle stronger systems)......But if you love Retro gaming then this is definitely the device for you, this little thing can run everything from Atari 2600 all the way to PSP and PS1 systems mostly with a good flow of consistent 60FPS, however it does require some setting up to do, that is if you are willing to have the patience to sit down and start tinkering....(I suggest you look up a tutorial, YouTube is a good place to start, search for: ANBERNIC RG405M Ultimate Setup Guide) Now to be fair, this device is already ready to pick and play, booting up your device for the first time will introduce you to a collection of pre-installed apps (most are bloat though), these are necessary to run your majority of games, and if your device comes with an SD card pre-loaded with (cough) games....then you are pretty good to go, however I do suggest you back up that SD card as soon as you can, these provided, preloaded SD cards tend to fail, they are very cheap so spend a little extra money and get yourself a good brand SD card, SD cards are cheap to buy so do not be stingy, get a good one.... IMO, you are better off building your own library of games (where you get your games is your problem, Google is your best friend, I cant give you suggestions on how to acquire them) and following a good tutorial, get a small storage SD card and focus on getting the games you KNOW you're going to play, lets be real, you're not gonna be playing thousands and thousands of games it will take you a lifetime, so just cherry pick the games you grew up with and love very much.... In conclusion, if you are patient enough to set up your device just right, you will be greatly rewarded with a solid device and then-some, with a premium feel and quality :)

Don't buy it, Good Consol but the screen is low quality
After being used for about six months, the screen started to show more issues without physical damage or drops. I have used it in the last couple of months, as 25% of the screen display is damaged, although the touch works normally.

Great RETRO gaming handheld!
This device is GREAT but let me be very clear that I have been using emulators for over 25 years. I like to tinker with technology, and I know my way around finding ROMs (games) from websites and torrents. I mention this because while this device CAN play all of your childhood favorites, it is not ready to go out of the box. So if you are not technologically curious and don't want to put in the time to set this up, you may be disappointed. Now that I've put in my disclaimer above, on to the device review. This thing is awesome. It comes preloaded with about every emulator you can think of (and then some more), and all you need to do is find a source to procure your games. However, if you REALLY want this thing to reach it's potential, google "RG404V Setup Guide", and there is a 35 minute video that will "debloat" the device and install legitimate copies of the emulators needed. Some of those emulators are paid apps (~$10 total), but you will get the benefits of having legitimate apps that will auto update from the Google Play Store. Regarding performance, the device appears to be emulate every console I've thrown at it handily, up until you get to PS2, Dreamcast, and GameCube that will require some tweaking of the settings to run at full speed; like I said this is a RETRO gaming handheld, so don't expect it to run modern consoles or games like a Steamdeck. Regarding arcade classics (using MAME), it can handle basically anything thru the early 2000s, UNLESS it is a game that had a laserdiscs or harddrives (like Killer Instinct or NFL Blitz, which are so slow as to be unplayable IMO). The controls feel comfortable and the large runch screen is nice, though you may still find it to be too small for some gaming systems, such as the NDS, which originally had 2 screens, or for vertical arcade shooters. That said, there are ways around the NDS limitations ilas you can program keys to swap the screen being displayed. Overall the form factor is comfortable in your hands, and while it is not small enough to be pocketable in my jeans, I can carry it in my shorts if necessary, though not comfortably. Finally, the screen is crisp and bright. The touchscreen is responsive, though who uses onscreen controls when you have built in sticks and buttons? Speaking of controls, the buttons and joysticks are all responsive with no noticable lag. All in, I am very happy with this purchase, and while it may take a new user a bit of time to learn the ins and outs of emulation, the end result is a highly enjoyable trip down memory lane. Happy gaming!

Solid device, but with a caveat
I've bought many similar devices over the years, and this one gets high marks for most things, but with one huge issue (for me anyway). Starting off with the good: * Quality build - the device itself is solid, has a surprising amount of heft to it, and just feels good. * Wide compatibility - unlike most similar devices, this actually had no issues at all playing things up to and including PSX. Supposedly, it does well with Dreamcast and even PS2, but for reasons I'll outline below, I never got a chance to try them. * Good controls - the controls themselves are responsive, feel good, and are mostly easy to reach - the select and start buttons are a tiny bit annoying, but they don't get pressed often so I'm okay with that. Despite the joystick positions being different from most of the competition, they work well and are low-profile enough that the right stick doesn't get "bumped" accidentally during play. * Amazing screen - this thing is the perfect size for pretty much everything I play on it and looks remarkably good. There's just a touch of light bleeding on the left edge of mine, but it's only noticeable when on a predominantly solid black screen. * Easy interface - the UI they've provided is both a pro and a con in my opinion. It's simple, easy to use (for the most part), and not entirely unattractive, but it's also very "what you see is what you get" - you can change accent colors and background images, but that's really about the extent of the real customization you get. There's more good than bad, but in my case, the bad was pretty significant, so definitely worth mentioning: * The shoulder buttons - while they work well, the positioning is a bit awkward. Thankfully, I don't need them often for the games I actually play on this, so not a huge issue for me, but could be problematic for others. * The UI - as mentioned above, the UI works well enough, but it's too inflexible for my tastes; I like tinkering and tweaking things and there's just not much opportunity to do that. If this was its biggest failing for me, I'd have no issues with it as a console, but read on! * The speakers - I'd love to be able to give them higher marks because they actually do sound really good for a device this size. Unfortunately, mine has a distinctive popping sound that is constantly in the background anytime a game is running but NOT playing audio (e.g.; during start, when a game is paused, during loading screens, etc). * The single biggest issue with mine - I'm willing to call this a manufacturing issue (possibly also for the speaker issue), but it's resulted in effectively a $200 paperweight that I can't figure out how to get rid of. When I received mine, I did the normal basic setup, copied over a few games for every platform I intended to use (GB, GBA, GBC, NES, Genesis, and PSX), and did some basic play testing. Zero problems beyond the speaker issue, which I opted to live with since it only happens when there's no other audio playing (not a common occurrence in the games I play). In the evening I actually sat down and did around two hours of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 and found it actually performed better than my computer did overall. The next morning, however, the problems started. When I booted the device to actually copy the rest of the games that I wanted to have on hand, the device went into a boot loop I couldn't break out of. I finally managed to get it to boot to the bootloader and decided to try installing Gamma OS to see if that would "unstick" whatever was going wrong with it. Installation seemed to go without a hitch, as did the initial setup, but after rebooting at the end of setup, the boot loop started again and this time I haven't even been able to get back into the bootloader. Now why this has turned into a nightmare: I'm not in the best of health - the whole reason I purchased this was so I'd have something to bring with me to the hospital on my all too frequent visits to keep me occupied for the long hours I'm stuck there. Since I can't even get it to fully boot, that's obviously not going to happen. Amazon wants me to print a return label and UPS it back to them for a refund. I don't own a printer, don't drive, and don't even have a print shop nearby I could take a taxi to - meaning I'd have to order a $200 printer just to print the label to get a refund on a $200 device that I really intend to buy again (because I'm still holding out hope it's a manufacturing defect). Not cool.

Great system and customer service
I initially got this system as I had a similar model that was running well enough but didn't have the full capabilities that I was looking for. I'm no expert in terms of emulator systems but have had some experience with all-in-one game systems and handheld multi platform gaming consoles in the past. This, however, is miles above those cheaply made, flimsy systems that are essentially 90% 8-bit games or knockoffs of popular media. This system allows you to run a variety of emulators which allows you to play several style games from a wide span of several decades. You can play classic SNES games, motion based Wii U games and a little bit of everything in between. There is a bit of a learning curve if you've never played an emulator but essentially what it does is allows the device, the RG405M, to replicate playing on a variety of Gaming consoles. All of the hard work is essentially done for you from the get-go as these emulators have been around for years but are already downloaded and fully activated on the device. All you really need to do is download your games from reputable, legal sites or copy them from your existing physical versions to create a portable game system that you can use virtually anywhere! And even that may be something you might not even have to do as the system posts and impressive ton of games already downloaded and ready to go once you turn this on. I looked through the list several times and, unlike similar systems that claim they have thousands of games that are all in one, this actually has no repeated games in their game lists. Some systems have hundreds of games already preloaded into the RG405M and it just takes a matter of finding which one is your favorite and with in a matter of clicks you're good to go. Games like pokemon, several Mario games, a number of Zelda games and a surprising number of Kirby games are already installed. My favorites are definitely the Crash Bandicoot games for the Game Boy Color and advanced emulators. Buying this over getting a brand new unit that has nothing installed is a no-brainer as it takes away 99% of the guesswork of jumping into emulators and playing them wherever you want. Now downtime is basically just more time to play as you can switch from Wii games to PlayStation to Sega Genesis, etc. games all within a few clicks of a button. Initially, my first unit arrived with some damage to the screen and I was really bummed but after contacting customer service, we reached a resolution to have the device replaced and the model I received is flawless. Took no time at all to reach a speedy resolution and the communication was excellent. Really felt like the seller was trying to make sure my purchase was a good one. Can't say enough about this unit and the seller in general as it allows me to relive Nostalgia from gaming as a kid, literally putting the power to play on my favorite units all in the palm of my hand!

Used more than my switch!
I thought I'd written a review for this at some point but I suppose not. I absolutely love this thing! With more options for games, I actually use it more frequently than my Switch. It's a great size with a very very nice, solid weight and runs smoothly. I really like that it has an option to quickly switch between game mode and regular android interface. It's also really nice that I can play android games without issue using a mapping app (Mantis I think the name is). Takes a bit of work to get things setup in Mantis initially but once configured, joy cons and everything work great in conjunction. There are instances where heavier games may not function too well like Genshin impact with heavier fighting but overall it's good. I have another anbernic device that I didn't power on for some time and I guess the battery died or something cause it no longer comes on, so I hope that will not happen with this one cause I would honestly be devastated. For the price, I am exceedingly impressed. Only callout I really have is that it might not be great for long sessions depending on your hand size or what you do for work (i.e. sitting at a computer for 8 hours). There's padding on the back which helps but that's all you get as far as ergonomics (I use that term loosely). The R+L buttons could bear to be separated cause their proximity is not nearly enough for them to be functional in the traditional sense but fortunately, I don't play many games requiring them. If you do, might recommend something like the Retroid instead. I am very happy with this purchase for what I do and have def recommended this when I get the opportunity.

Does not disappoint- An amazing handheld console that does it all!
I almost bought an RG353V when I heard about them - I’m glad I waited to get the REAL DEAL - The RG405V is a MASSIVE improvement and is MUCH more ergonomic, and has higher performance. The screen improvements and the HAL-style joysticks alone made this worth it, plus the larger chassis and larger battery sealed the deal! NOTE: Some PS2 games and other high-end titles really require some fiddling and customization to make them work - Otherwise This thing is a tank. Also, the included games are plentiful, but some Japanese-release anime junk and platforms that you’d only want to play if you were a hardcore game collector or really into Japanese gaming or foreign retro games. I was able to clean up my collection and add some of my favorite games from my own ROM collection and have the ultimate mobile retro gaming solution with this thing! The ONLY thing I could see making this thing better, is an improved screen with less light leak and OLED levels of contrast and brightness. The IPS LED screen included is nice, but at 640x480 I would think some better screens could be made for not a lot of extra BOM cost. Needless to say this is a pipe dream, but I’d be forking over $$ again if such a device came out. So glad to see these hitting the mainstream market through reliable retailers like Amazon!
