Yes. You can use the speaker without lights on it. Touch the logo on top of the speaker, to cycle through the color options until the light shuts off. Tap the logo again to turn the lights back on at any time.

are the lights able to be switched off while playing music?

The multi-color lights can be turned off, but the light on the volume knob always remains lit.
