The main problem I've found with this contraption is, that although it is relatively small, because of our small kitchen it has to be stored away on a shelf. Since we've cooked in our kitchen for over a decade without a fan, we always forget about it until our house is filled with oily smells.Last night, when making tofu katsu, I made a batch without the fan. As the kitchen started filling up with the familiar greasy smell I remembered the fan and set it up over the skillet. It has two settings and they're both pretty loud. On the highest setting you could not listen to music or have a conversation while it's running. I put in on the lower setting and could visibly see the smoke being sucked up into it.. I left it running while we ate and have to say that the the smell was much less noticeable after the second round of frying than the first.It does work, it is attractive, but it takes up room.
