when painting a motorcycle fuel tank: if prepped, is it possible to paint over existing coatings (i.e.: 60s Honda black paint?)  — or is sanding req?

Car-Rep 2K Top Coats are compatible with most base coats. Most likely 60's bike would have an alkyd paint on it and it should work. We always recommend testing on a non-visible surface first; reacting to existing paint surface is rare but it does happen from time to time. Prep your surface well: clean and light sanding is recommended along with repairing any scratches with filling material. You final painted surface will always look as good as the prep work so it's key to a superb finish. good luck, let us know how you make out.

Can I add another coat after paint has dried?

Accepted Answer

We usually recommend spraying 3 coats with a flash time between coats of about 3 minutes. keep your spraying distance between 6-8”, spray with a consistent spray and in thin layers. Your first coat should be a very light tack coat, then a medium and finish with a wet coat.
If the paint has had longer than that you need to wait at least 48 hours until it has fully cured before applying another coat. Please see car-rep.com for more application advise.
