Love this litter box.. I bought two!
I have to say, this is the best litter box I have ever been able to find. It replaced my two top entry litter boxes (what I settled for, but my cats were still tracking litter and had a terrible time with “litter foot”). I’ve had many cats and many litter boxes throughout my life and this one is the winner in my household. My cats are 10 lbs and 12 lbs (both are health weight cats, age 2 and 6) and it fits them perfectly. It’s also not huge like most boxes that take up a ton of space, this one is large enough for my cats but small enough that it can fit discreetly where I need it. I took the flap off both because one of my cats gets really confused and can’t get out lol (which has always been a problem for him). I’ve been through the litter all over the floor, tried mats with no luck, and tried many different litter boxes. From the expensive, even to the self cleaning ones. Out of all of them, my cats track the least amount of litter with this one. I assume because of the little piece that they step on to get in and out that allows litter to fall back into the box. One of my cats is a zoomer after he uses the litter box, so this helps a lot with him having to take a second to get out and the litter isn’t tracked through my home. He also has some issues with using only a particular type of litter, so I had to search for the right litter box. That piece that catches the litter can be detached if not wanted. It also comes with a scooper that is stored INSIDE of the box which I absolutely love because there’s not an unsightly, dirty scooper hanging around the box for everyone to see, and it just stores so nicely. There are 2 things that I would change about this litter box- 1. The bottom is not flat, there are 4 pieces that slightly stick up and litter does gather around it. But it is not hard to remove by flipping the scooper over and pushing it up before scooping it. 2- the lid does not lock in place. It’s not a huge deal to me and my cats don’t knock it off, but when I need to move it I have to grab it by the bottom, I can’t just grab it by the top handle. Those issues are minor to me and do not affect my 5 star rating because this box has been a life saver when it comes to my cats and the messes they were leaving before. Definitely recommend for average sized cats, but if you have a larger cat it may not be a large enough space for them.

Love this litter box!
I have bought many litter boxes and this one does it all. I've used this for rabbits for a year but can see how most of the same things apply to cats. I love how deep the box is, keeps Everything inside. The translucent top allows me to see that my pet is inside while also closing them in making them comfortable to eat hay and do their thing. (some rabbits won't use an uncovered, 'out in the open' box but they both love this thing which means they actually use it instead of the rest of the house!) The top is quite flimsy but honestly, does it matter? Yes, the top does not connect but how would you clean the box if you couldn't take the top off? You can easily get it to stay in place with binder clips, stick on velcro, or even just wedging it between two items. The door and rack to step on keep Everything inside and perfectly catch any stuck poop and drop it through the holes before the bunny leaves. I use the rack as a shelf to put their hay under. The door pops off if you want more air so litter(rabbit kind) does not mold. However the door and having it fully enclosed really does keep oder inside. It really only fits one 4-8 lb bun at a time. If you had two very small rabbits that would work. If there were a much larger option I would buy it and use it for both rabbits.

90% great! 😄
I *almost* love this litter box, though my small cat thinks it's great. We got it because our new puppy was finding 'snacks' in her old (uncovered) box and that was obviously unacceptable. So I found this one, which was reasonably priced. It's nicely sized & fits my (small) adult cat well, though I'm not sure how well larger cats would fit into it. I *LOVE* the little (removable) grate at the door, that has been very helpful in keeping the litter inside the box, and not coming out with her as she leaves. My only complaints are these 3 small things (not really enough for me to discourage someone from buying it though): 1) the scoop that comes with it, is less than useful for smaller chunks, bc the the sifting holes are too large. I already had a scoop, so I use it instead. 2) the bottom of the box isn't flat everywhere, so it makes scooping stuff near the bottom a tad cumbersome in some places around the edges. 3) the top isn't locked down. It fits snuggly, but it doesn't lock into place like other covered boxes I've had in the past, so even though there is a handle on the top of the lid you can't use it to pick up the entire unit. Not the end of the world, but it IS a little misleading, if you see the handle while the lid is on; it just allows you to lift the top off the bottom. The other potential issue I see with this, is if your cat jumps up (scared) or bumps the top of the lid too hard, it could come off while he/she is inside.

Frustrating to clean
Cleaning it is extremely frustrating. The bottom isn’t flat and there is no good way to scoop in the channels on either side.. just frustrating and poorly thought out. It feels like whoever designed this couldn’t possibly be a cat owner. The lid has no latch so is not secured to the bottom half in any way. The handle on top is kind of pointless. The scoop’s holes are too big and let small clumps fall through, plus it is flimsy. The bottom does hold a lot of litter - so if you have a cat who likes to dig then this one has room for excavating. The flap door is nice because it deters my nosy dog, and probably keeps the smell in a tiny bit. But the entry way is a high and not good for older cats unless you have a ramp or a step. The ledge for allowing litter to fall through seems helpful but it reduces the amount of usable space inside significantly. Not good for larger cats.

cats barely fit inside and sometimes urine comes out from under the cover, as my cats are taller than the base!

I have five (yes, five) Ragdolls. They are big kitties and hooded litter boxes are a must for my big man Binks or he misses; I have two XL corner ones, and am slowly replacing 3 of my standard ones and getting one more finally, as budget permits. (One box per kitty plus one extra rule!) When I ordered this, I figured it would be too small, but I liked the price point and it’s hooded. I also had gift cards, so no loss. To my delight, it’s only been a few days and, legit, it’s a fan favourite! Just as the other reviews have said, the door is useless; it came off and will definitely not stand any regular traffic. I took it off, but this worked for me, as one of my cats is outright stupid (Beau) and the other is a bit slow (Edgar). The litter catcher piece is actually amazing! Their fuzzy pantaloons usually have stragglers, but this has it cut down significantly and doesn’t deter or hinder them going in like I thought it would. Like I said, they are big kitties (two are ~15 lbs), really too big for it, but they just LOVE it; if it ain’t broke! Haha. Suffice to say, I will be getting three more! Paired with the two XL corner ones I have, I have happy kitties and I’m a happy cat mom!

Quality-wise there is nothing wrong with this box, but if you have a larger-sized or growing cat, this box may not be big enough, especially if you want to use the top cover with it. My cat is a common tabby, male, around 1 year old and he is too big to use this box properly with the top cover. I noticed his butt area was often not clean after using it and I think it was because he did not have enough room inside to move around properly. I ended up getting a larger top-entrance litter box that he uses now. You can just take off the lid but the sides may not be high enough to keep litter inside if your cat digs around. Plastic feels high quality and durable. The grill at the entrance is not a bad feature but I think it also takes away some of the space inside the box. Would recommend for smaller cats.

We've been using Van Ness enclosed cat litter boxes without complaint for a few years with only one big exception: LITTER TRACKING. We tried different litter types/brands to address this issue but came back full circle to the original all-natural pine-based clumping litter. As the second step we decide to try a different litter box to reduce litter tracking. An IRIS Split Hood Cat Litter Box came highly recommended by Japanese cat owners, and its built-in paw-cleaning grid seemed like a good solution to our problem. Well, what a disappointment this litter box turned out to be! Unlike their Japanese counterparts, the US version lacks a locking device so the hood got knocked out of place every time our cat entered or exited the box! There is a handle at the top, but, since nothing is holding the hood and tray together, the hood comes right off leaving the tray behind! To move this litter box, let's say for vacuuming, you'll need to lift the whole thing with both hands! How stupid is that? [NOTE: Spring-loaded clips can fixed this problem, but it's a VERY annoying oversight especially because it could be easily fixed by a slight design change.] Also, the bottom of the tray has many "bumps" for no apparent reasons. This makes scooping awkward and frustrating. As for reducing litter tracking, the paw-cleaning grid has some effect but not nearly enough. I'd say the grid reduced scattered litter by 10 to 20% in our household. Our cat is smaller than the average (8 lb/3.6 kg), so she doesn't have trouble moving around in this litter box. However, my guess is that most cats in North America would find it too small because the grid cuts into the manoeuvrable space inside. I like the fact the hood is translucent and the front part of the hood flips up for scooping. I also like having the paw-cleaning grid. However, I DESPISE the lack of a locking mechanism to keep the hood and tray together. It seems ridiculous that the box comes apart every time a cat uses it or you try to lift it up. It's stupid not to have a flat tray bottom for scooping too. The bundled scooper can be neatly stored inside the box, but the scooper is for pellets and not suitable for our clumping pine litter, rending it useless. I really wish IRIS USA will employ the same litter box designs used in Japan while adjusting the box size to accommodate bigger cats here.
