Do I need to use primer for painting straight into rust?

We didn't use a primer on the rust and we were very pleased with the result. Have used it on on quite a few things. Great stuff.

can this (hammered finish) be used on top of 'smooth' Hammerite?

Haven't tried that, my husband said to give the item a light sanding then paint on the hammered paint. This product is brilliant and last's a long time on our outside iron table and chairs, they have been out all winter and looks as good as when we painted them. Hope this helps.

Is the tin 1 litre ie 750ml plus 33% extra as in the image or 750ml as described please?

The tin I received is 750 PLUS 33% i.e. 1L

What is the approximate coverage? I have a garden table and 4 chairs. They are not solid metal and have a lattice effect to the table top and seats.

It tells you the standard surface coverage on the tin. As you've a complex shape to paint, you'll have to estimate the surface area to be covered, which will depend on whether your lattice is more holes than metal or vice-versa and thickness of each strip.
