Great all-around shoe
I needed a shoe that I could wear out and about and also could go into the woods and hike a nice trail. I'm a bit of an overpacker, so having a shoe that would serve multiple purposes for me really helps reduce what I'm carrying. I read a lot of reviews before purchasing this shoe, and overall, it was rated quite well. My expectations were fairly high, and this shoe truly knocked it out of the park. First, they're incredibly lightweight, which is important for both usage and packing. They're attractive looking and match most casual outfits. I wear a size 8, and ordered a size 8. Perfect fit. The toe box is spacious and the shoe fits perfectly. The light grey is a nice, simple look, but I do worry about how easy they'll be to clean. They've been pretty good at fending off dirt, even as I tromped through the woods after a rain. I need ankle support on most hikes, so I likely won't wear these on my longer or more difficult hikes, but for an easy hike, I'll definitely choose them. Don't get me wrong, if I didn't need ankle support, I'd wear them for all hikes, but I'm far too clumsy not to have mid-height boots at the least. The tread is impressive, and I definitely believe they'll be great for any type of walking I choose to wear them for. I have flat feet, so I sometimes struggle with shoes, but these are the right amount of support. My feet haven't hurt once since wearing them. I've even started using them on my walking pad at home. They aren't waterproof, so I'll have to keep that in mind for rainy days. But if you're looking for a light-weight trail running shoe, this could be a great choice for you!

The perfect hiking shoe! Not so much for the Lone peak 8’s though.
I never knew how much I needed a wide toe box in my shoes until I started wearing the Altra Lone Peaks. Now, I can’t find true comfort in any other shoe! I’ve tried wide shoes in the past. In fact, my hiking boots are wide. But the problem with wide shoes is that the whole shoe is wider than regular shoes, not just the toe box. But my foot is only wide around the ball of my foot. My mid-foot and heel areas are not wide. So wide shoes always feel big on me. I never realized how much regular shoes squeeze the ball of my foot, and become uncomfortable after a while. Now I notice it in every shoe. These shoes are not like typical wide shoes, as these are only wide in the toe box. I guess, according to shoe manufacturers, I’m abnormal, since no one else makes shoes with such a wide toe box. Even other styles of Altra do not compare to the Lone Peaks, which have Altra’s widest toe box. The Lone Peaks are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever put on my feet, not only for the ball area of my foot, but I also love having plenty of room for my toes to spread out while hiking. I can actually feel my toes working to grip the uneven trail surface, which I wasn’t sure at first that I liked, because I actually felt like my foot muscles were getting a work-out . . . A new sensation for me. But after hiking in Lone Peaks for several years now, I absolutely love it! I feel like my feet are stronger! Who knew?! Anyway, I do have to mention that I have two pairs of the Lone Peak 6’s, and one pair of the Lone Peak 7’s. I tried on a pair of the Lone Peak 8’s, and was a little disappointed, because the sole of the shoe was not as squishy and comfortable as the 6’s and 7’s. Turns out, they added a rock plate into the soles of the 8’s, which makes them not as comfortable as the 6’s and 7’s. I don’t know why manufacturers always feel like they have to fix what isn’t broken, and in the process, they mess up a good thing. I will still probably end up buying a pair of the 8’s though, just because I love the wide toe box that much.

Did I mention how much I love these? Back for my 4th pair (yes I keep 2 backups)
I'm back with update as I replace my original pair with another of two that have been waiting in my closet, and now replacing the backup in case I ever can't get these again. Today, after loving and beating on the original pair for the 22 months, it's finally time for their retirement. The upper is still in great condition with no sign of sole separation which is usually the point of failure for other sneakers. These have even been scrubbed after hiking through creeks and mud. Ultimately the tread wore down to the point of feeling it in my performance so it's time for new ones. To date, these have carried me over probably hundreds rough, rocky miles of AZ trails. I am very impressed. Also, today while hiking I *almost* rolled my ankle but was saved. This is something I used to be prone to but realized these Lone Peak 7 sneakers seem to have helped me avoid the accident in general, as it's been a really long time since it's happened, thank goodness. Maybe it's the zero drop, low profile sole, but it's saved my ankles over the years and today included. These literally have made me safer and happier and I love them for it. Original post: Zero drop, just enough arch support so I’m not rolling my ankle, wonderfully wide toe box. My first impression when I tried on the tan ones in person was “I feel like a duck or a cabbage patch kid” but they were so comfortable and wonderful that I bought them, fell in hiking love, and since then bought two more pairs on sale here at Amazon.

Stick with the Lone Peak 6 for Hiking
I have very wide, flat feet and have been wearing the Lone Peak 6 for several years. While the Lone Peak 7 is mostly the same, there are a few 'improvements' that I personally don't care for. Note, I am a hiker, not a runner and perhaps said improvements benefit runners. First, the heel is now stiffer and rubs differently on the back of my heel. It feels less slipper-like and requires breaking in. Second, the holes in the front that water used to drain out of are gone. Lastly, the sole feels stiffer, so more like a shoe. I will probably bring camp shoes now while backpacking instead of sticking with these all night at camp. Overall, still a nice, wide fit. The look is similar. Not sure why Wide is only sold with a light colored base. Seems silly to have a light colored shoe when you are on a muddy trail. Still a good buy. Highly recommend, but I will continue to buy the 6 as long as I can still find it.

Brilliant red colour. Comfortable toe box. Zero drop so it's got a nearly bare foot feel.
