Does this act as an router as well?

The Dream Machine Special Edition is an all-in-one network appliance, but its core function is to serve as a router/firewall. You can use this product as a router connected to your cable modem, fiber ONT etc., or you can place it behind a router provided by your internet service provider.

Does this device contain an internal fan? I plan to use this in a home office where all of my networking equipment sits right next to my desk.

Do you really need an additional switch if using for home wifi/security? (New to this type of Wifi setup beyond "traditional" home wifi setups.)

You specifically asked about WiFi, so I thought I should point out that this box doesn't actually have any WiFi functionality built-in. For WiFi capability, you must add one or more WiFi access points which are normally connected to this Dream Machine SE using network cables. This box can perform many different functions. It can be used as a console, a firewall, a router, a small POE switch, a host for multiple VLANs, network storage, and even a network video recorder for (only) Ubiquiti branded cameras. Regarding the extra switch, you would only need it if you require more wired connections than the remaining unused LAN ports on this box. Of the 8 ports, you might have 5 left unused for connecting client machines. If you have added an access point for WiFi, you could just connect everything else in your home via WiFi to avoid having an extra switch. Hope this helps.

Can this be managed remotely outside the network on the iPhone app?

Yes, it can be managed with Iphone via UniFi application suite for device management which is bundled with Dream Machine.
