I am normally a medium so I ordered a large based on how others found the fit to be smaller than expected. The waist is pretty good but I didn't realize that the rest of the shorts would be so tight-fitting based on how the model looks in the shorts; however, I am more on the muscular side - I'm 6'3", 32-33 waist, 200lbs, 17% body fat, 24" quads. If I was a runner that really focused on just running constantly instead of running some and really working on building muscle, I think these would have been exactly what I had expected. They aren't super snug like trunk underwear, but they fit more like trunk underwear that has been worn a while and stretched a bit. Having said that, I still think the shorts are really nice, and I am planning on wearing them as swim trunks. They are extremely comfortable. The material is similar to Lycra. If you have a larger athletic build I would recommend ordering a size larger than you think you'll need which I believe has already been mentioned in other reviews. I completely forgot to do so when I purchased but sent out an email requesting the size change and they were happy to make the change before shipping and responded to my request very quickly. The drawstring was also very long but not an issue as I just cut it down to a manageable length, tied a knot in each end, and melted the tips. The liner is also more of a "marble bag" and is a little small but it works.
