We all need clarity! Having run a business for 10 years with many a 'job description', constantly changing tasks, deliverables across most aspects of the business, this book clearly described who I was and what I did ...I was a COO and my partner was the CEO. When in sync, we were unstoppable and created a great business.

WOW! Having been playing the role of "second in command" for 2 "Start ups" which both had insane scaling up I can tell you that this book brings so much clarity to the role of "COO" - read the book to see why I am putting quotes on this title :). It's hard enough to hire the right people for certain roles as well as knowing what roles you need to fill, but the role of "second in command" can be one of the hardest and potentially the most expensive and disastrous if you don't get it right. Cameron, who has so much experience both in this role as well as coaching CEO's, has written a wonderful, easy to read, book that will walk CEO's and owners through all the elements of this process, starting with why this role is so different than any other role in companies through how to make the right hire! P.S. It might not even be a COO!! Lastly this book is not just for CEO's thinking about making this hire. As a COO myself, this was an eye opening book for me to read. This helped me put my role, my responsibilities, and my unique skills, in perspective with the relationship I have with my CEO and President and what I need to be thinking about as we continue to scale and grow! Well done Cameron, another book in the long list of extremely impactful and well written books you have authored!

I've known Cameron for many years and have purchased and read all of his books. I can truthfully say that The Second in Command is one of his best. The practices he shares in his book is coming from the lens of a practitioner due to his experience AND and advisor to many companies across dozens of industries. Part 2 (chapters 5 & 6) was my favourite section of the book. Cameron spares no expense all throughout the book. Don't expect theory in this book. Cameron brings actionable strategies that you can use immediately.

This is a very useful book for leaders in the organisation and for founders. It is written in a clear and direct style. The book covers in detail the whole process of assessing if it is time to hire your second-in-command (COO), how to hire them, and how effectively to integrate them as part of the team. Cameron is a world-known expert on the subject. Recently, I also took his course on leadership (Invest in Your Leaders), and it has been instrumental in making some changes and bringing awareness to my leadership style. Get this book if you would like to grow as a leader.
