Good Value & Performance
This mobo was central to my budget home built music PC as for the price, it is a good performer with good specs. Asus have a good reputation for motherboards and this one is no exception. I was also pleasantly surprised that the RAM limit was not 8GB as I was led to believe but 32GB, which is brilliant. Although i5 and i7 CPU's are recommended for music recording, they tend to be more expensive and for the sort of music I intend to do are not strictly necessary, and the AMD Phenom II 4core black CPU I installed was about £100 cheaper than the Intel alternative. The extra cash saved was used to buy a SSD which has improved loading speeds considerably. With 10 x USB 2.0 ports and 2 x USB 3.0 ports this board can deal with all my peripherals without having to buy an additional USB expander. The USB 3.0 ports should deal with any future expansions. The six SATA ports are also good, although once an SSD, DVD drive and a couple of HDD's are installed it only leaves 2 ports free for future use. My only criticism is that the SATA ports are 3GBs instead of the faster 6GBs, but this is a mid-range board and the difference in speed would be hard to notice. The 4 expansion ports are okay and the on board sound and graphics are good and, as a music PC doesn't require state of the art graphics or sound (we use an external audio interface) upgrades are not necessary, unless you want to play top rate games. All in all a great motherboard for the money which has enabled me to build a well specified music PC for under £500.

Great for home servers, cheapest way to ECC RAM
Good little board, ideal for an all-in-one home server. I run Server 2012R2 on mine, along with HyperV. I have no problems with speed, and thanks to the 4 DIMM slots it can take 32GB RAM. It's also working perfectly with ECC RAM, the ECC function fully working. This is the great feature of AM3+ boards, they're less than a third the price of an Intel C2xx board which you need for ECC on Intel chips. The BIOS is a bit antiquated, nowhere near as good as the modern UEFI BIOS screens on more recent boards, but everything is there including Easy Flash (just put the BIOS update file on a USB stick and flash the BIOS easily from the BIOS screen). The Realtek 8111D NIC is just OK too, it works fine but it's no Intel. It's not even the most modern Realtek chip. Finally, the top PCI-E 1x slot is very close to the chipset heat sink. They've cut a slot out of the sink for the card, but you need to be very careful with cards that have components on the back, as they could short against the heat sink, or get knocked off while inserting the card. My Intel Pro/1000 PT card has some inductor coils on the back which rest against the heat sink. I used a little electrical tape to insulate the two. It's not a massive problem, just something to be aware of. For the money, it's a great board. I like it more than the Gigabyte 78LMT/USB3, which is a similar sort of board, but has one less SATA port and the addition of a useless PATA port. The Gigabyte does have a front USB3 connector, too, but it's USB3 is run off a terrible JMicron controller. The Asus uses an AsMedia which seems to work very well in my limited testing. Spec of my machine: M5A78L-M/USB board, FX8320E 95W 8-core 3.2GHz Artic Alpine 64 Pro heat sink (AMD's retail cooler is terrible) 2x8GB Kingston DDR3L-1600 ECC RAM 2x180GB Intel Pro SSD 1500 (OS and VM stores) 4x5TB WD Red (media storage) Supermicro 731D case Corsair CS450M PSU

good for the average gaming board and at a competitive price ive built a lot with this board for fellow gamers it is a basic but nice board with enough function for the money to last some time in a gaming system do not be put off by the price it does what most higher priced boards do reguarding the sound and performance unless your spending hundreds of pounds it just does the job nicely and ram is a good question i would use a single stick or a 4gb dual pack with a better than stock cpu cooler it will run hot on a stock cooler and limit the cpu over long or demanding games any compatible air or water cooler will bring down the heat nicely use a 12 cm fan cooler or a dual fan configuration it is up to you i bought an amd fx 6300 with an 8gb stick and 25 bucks bigger cooler it works fine with less cpu fan noise. the ram speed was 1600 mhz but it will go higher i chose a 64 bit o/s and an atx case with front and back fans for air flow and it works just fine without issues in an atx form factor case. so it goes well and i like this board it just does the job guys.

Not for use in an Obsidian 350D
If you have a case that utilizes a USB3 front panel, this is not the motherboard for you. The Corsair 350D for example has a 20-pin front panel connector and USB3 ports on the front panel, but the Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 only has USB3 ports at the back of the motherboard and no 20-pin connector for the front panel. They should really make this clearer on the description, but they didn't, and as a result I am returning what otherwise was an excellent motherboard, by all accounts. They also have this motherboard identified as being only able to accept 16Gb of RAM and this is another mistake as it has 4 sockets which can accept up to an 8Gb DDR3 module in each (4 x 8 = 32), and the handbook makes this very clear. This is obviously a mistake by whoever made this product description on Amazon. Onward and upward Geraldo!

Excellent Motherboard
I have owned the Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 motherboard for just over a week now after building my own computer. I have been very impressed with this motherboard so far and how easy it was to build my system using this motherboard. So far I have had no issues with the motherboard and for such a low price I cannot fault it, however you will be limited to one PCIe x16 socket. Good Points: - Easy to install and build system with included instructions booklet. - Supports AMD FX processors using the AM3+ socket. - Installation made easy with motherboard manual. - Good value for money and many useful features. Considerations: - Only has one PCIe x16 slot meaning that you won't be able to crossfire graphics cards. - No internal USB 3.0 header for front panel USB 3.0 connector.

Unfortunately the platform is really out of date in 2017 and I would consider holding out for AMD zen for on-board NVME support
The main reasons for buying this board are that it's cheap and it has Unbuffered ECC support which goes well for the AMD FX series processors (all of which support ECC). This is definitely the cheapest way to get yourself setup with a proper Linux server box at home. If you want to take advantage of the ECC capabilities, be sure to buy Unbuffered ECC memory and turn on the ECC capabilities which are off in the bios by default. Unfortunately the platform is really out of date in 2017 and I would consider holding out for AMD zen for on-board NVME support and it would be nice to have some more pci express slots. Unfortunately this board won't be able to support a graphics card and an NVME to pci express adapter at the same time, unless you were to get a very old graphics card that could plug into one of the old-school PCI slots (which are still useful for adding a NIC).

It's a pretty great motherboard
It's a pretty great motherboard. The BIOS looks a bit ancient but I didn't buy this motherboard to play around with the mobo. Positive: No weird RAM clock limits like the other AM3+ mATX motherboards. Negative: -The I/O shield is a bit of a hassle to work with but be patient. Protip: there's three sets of double metal thingies that should go above the port housings. Otherwise, everything else should be pushed outwards. Fit the shield onto the motherboard outside of the case to bend the metal thingies but be careful with bending the shield itself. -Can't plug headphones to the back for less static, all the ports in there only work in surround speaker mode. -SATA 2.0. Just don't put in any crazy fast SSDs, budget ones shouldn't get bottlenecked but grabbing up pricier ones for the sake of plugging them into this mobo. -No USB3.0 headers. If your case has USB3.0 ports in the front, you need to get one of these CSL - 5 Port incl. Header USB 3.0 PCI Express (PCIe) Controller | 5 x external (Ports) / 1 x internal (Controller/Header) | 15 pin SATA-power connection | Interface Card USB 3.0 Super Speed | internal USB Hub (which the motherboard supports because of the PCIE slot at the top.) In my opinion, this is still the best mATX mobo for AM3+.

I Love This Motherboard!
This motherboard is a top quality product, and has everything you could possibly desire for this price range - it is well made and durable, it has some great features, and it functions excellently. I used this recently in my first time build. I used an AMD fx 8120 CPU, 8gb corsiar vengeance RAM and a HD radeon 7850 graphics card, and the setup works perfectly. The manual that accompanies this product is concise and clear. The features on this motherbaord are great, and the disks supplied feature drivers for a number of other useful features and programs including a sound configurtion program, google chrome, and anti-virus software. I have experienced a grand total of ZERO issues with this motherboard one week after my build. It even lay unused in my wardrobe for 5 months whilst I selected and bought my other components! 100% happy, would certainly recommend to anyone.
