Its all based on a true story, which does mean you need to forgive it some of its obvious narrative conventions, yet this also lends it a gravitas that the film eagerly makes the most of. Its great too to see British director Ridley Scott tackling meatier material again. This is the man, after all, who gave us Blade Runner, Alien and Gladiator, and he duly delivers with American Gangster. His finest work it isnt, but an engrossing, explosive and hard-as-nails drama it absolutely is. Whats more, American Gangster is powered by two of the finest leading man working in Hollywood right now, and its terrific to see Washington and Crowe on top form here. Absolutely Fantastic.....
I have watched this movie at least 6 times and intend to watch it many more times. For me this is one of my all time greats. Washington and Crowe are fantastic and the whole supporting cast do an excellent job. I'm in agreement with all the other 5 star reviewers of this movie. Watch and Enjoy, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Worth buying
Arrived on time, was the DVD I ordered and was a good film. Not quite as powerful as Sopranos or The Godfather, but excellent value for money.

Ridley Scott setzt sich wieder mit einem vielschichtigen Epos auseinander – dieses Mal nicht innerhalb des Science-Fiction-Umfelds von Blade Runner oder der antiken Welt von Gladiator, sondern einer Großstadtgeschichte. American Gangster erzählt aus dem Leben von Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), einem realen Verbrecherkönig aus Harlem, der sich mit Hilfe von südostasiatischem Heroin in den Siebziger Jahren ein Imperium aufbaute. Parallel zu Lucas’ ziemlich einfacher Geschichte bewegen sich die beharrlichen Ermittlungen eines Polizisten aus New Jersey namens Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe). Roberts ist ein interessanterer Charakter als Lucas: viel zu ehrlich für sein Umfeld und im Privatleben vom Pech verfolgt – und diese Art von Figur, die von anderen herablassend behandelt wird, passt perfekt zu Crowe. Scotts Tendenz, den Zuschauer mit der Nase auf bestimmte Dinge zu stoßen, ist auch hier zu beobachten, inklusive der leicht klischeehaften Besetzung von Nebenrollen und der vorhersehbaren Stimmung, die an Serpico erinnert. (Und was Nebenrollen angeht: Chiwetel Ejiofor hätte man in dem Film viel mehr Raum als Lucas’ Mitstreiter einräumen sollen.) Der Film liefert etwas zähe Unterhaltung, die durch die Präsenz der beiden großen Stars aber an Wirkung gewinnt. Sowohl Washington als auch Crowe kommen hier als ziemlich zähe Burschen rüber. --Robert Horton Dem kann ich mich so nicht anschließen. D. Washington brilliert wie immer.
