Steps to Academic Writing (Georgian Press)

This book is a real treasure for IELTS students who are struggling with writing, I used this book to help me with my writing as it has such a great , detailed explanation for both task 1&2 and eventually it helped me to achieve my target band score of 7.5 in writing so I STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT.

Ms Barry is a prodigious author of quality non-fiction primarily for those interested in improving english as a second language. With so many academics publishing their course material this can be a cluttered market that is difficult to navigate. So it is refreshing to find a book of this kind that has been scrupulously prepared to help the student get the most out of it. I highly recommend this book, particularly to those from overseas, who wish to improve their academic writing.

Unlike many books for this sort of English at this level, this one is not just a set of practice papers with answers. It really helps the students to build up their language knowledge. It would be ideal for someone hoping to attend a British university, though I am actually using it for non native speakers already working here who need to improve their report writing and presentation skills. Note that this book is actually published by Cambridge University Press.

I have taught ESOL students for many years and used various books during that time. I now find that the profile of many ESOL students is changing and have found that Steps to Academic Writing ticks all the boxes in dealing with these changes. It really helps ESOL students who wish to develop their presentation skills and meets their demands as they move into more challenging roles in their jobs.
