Review: I love the insight into modern film techniques - Art of books are something of a guilty pleasure for this reader. I love the insight into modern film techniques, whether it's animation, CG or live action. This one, the Art of Mad Max: Fury Road is, like the film itself, an amazing testament to the vision of director George Miller. It reveals in startling detail the sheer bravado of his epic, crazy, beautiful post-apocalyptic film. One achieved mostly without the aid of CG. The insight into the stunts and practical effects is particularly fascinating as is the breakdowns of the many vehicles featured - and utterly destroyed - in the movie. This is a BIG book. Satisfyingly printed on heavy stock. Inside the layouts are beautifully composed with a mixture of photographs, concept art and behind-the-scenes shots. There's a ton of detail about the characters and settings, offering just enough additional information to make the book more than just a collection of lush imagery. A must-buy for Mad Max, sci-fi and film fans everywhere. Highly recommended! Review: Fantastic. Essential for any movie fan. - 'The Art of Mad Max: Fury Road' is as comprehensive a document as you could want for a film that has only just been released. The title is somewhat misleading as (especially with the 'inspired artists' book being released at the same time) this is actually 'the making of fury road'. It's a beautiful hardback book (no jacket) and large enough to be impressive without being difficult to hold. Director George Miller kicks things off with a foreword which includes the original fairytale style 'once upon a time' prologue from, I assume, the original script, before we are taken through the history of the production; complete with 1999 era storyboards and Peter Pound illustrations. The remainder of the book is split into chapters which deal with key areas from the film: The V8 Interceptor, The Road Warrior, The Citadel, Furiosa,The War Rig, Immortan Joe, The Gigahorse, Pursuit Vehicles, The Buzzard Attack, The Excavator, Coma Doof, Miss Giddy, The Toxic Storm, Post Storm, The Wives, Nux, The Plains, The Canyon and the Rock Riders, Bigfoot Chase, Ornaments/Masks and Weapons, The Night Bog, Bullet Farmer, People Eater and the Vuvana. There are 170 pages and all complete with fantastic photos, behind the scenes stuff, storyboards, things that didn't make the film (including a map of the bulletfarmers citadel) and thoughts from everyone involved. It's brilliant and the type of thing you normally expect to come out 30 years after a films release. If you are a Mad Max fan you are on for a treat, if you are a fan of movies in general this is inspiring stuff and is highly recommended.

I absolutely loved the film and have seen it twice already so thought I'd take a chance on this book as when I bought it there were no reviews anywhere, and I'm glad I did. Its a large, well made, hardback book and is packed full of set designs, stills, concept art and photos from the film. It also has comments from the production team and a huge amount of background information for the film, you can tell that its been loving assembled and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone that enjoyed the film.

The Book Itself Is A Work Of Art!
Beautiful Book, possibly more for the fans though? As great as the movie is, some of the designs here indicate that what was planned was even more visually OTT. The early designs of Immortan Joe, People Eater, Bullet Farmer and Nux were even more radical than what finished up on the screen!! I think George Miller maybe had to tone it down or else the film may have looked just a little too Fantasy/SF than was wanted. The people Eater was pretty gross in the movie but some of the designs are more like something like Lord Of The Rings. Immortan Joe's early designs are very sinister looking , one of them reminding me of HR Giger's Alien. It perhaps would have worked as adult animation but not transferred over as live action. See for yourselves, the artwork is just nuts!! Of course it' not just art as you've got loads of photos of props, cars, weapons etc. Some of this is only glimpsed for a second, especially much of the weaponry so it's great to see. Also the wasteland artwork is more developed than in the movie with more ruins of skyscrapers etc. The movie showed almost a totally featureless, flat and barren world with the exception of The Citadel and (the barely glimpsed) Gas Town. The book expands more on both Gas town and Bullet Farm. To have brought these to screen as well would have probably doubled the budget. Couldn't get over the size of the book; it's seriously hefty! Go on, you know you want to ;-) .......

Very interesting book with lots of great sketches and pics
Very interesting book with lots of great sketches and pics, however the book is pretty small. That's a pity because it would be so much better in a large coffee table print format.

A Blend Of Steam Punk Meets Apocalyptic Imagery
A beautifully colourful, hardback book that captures the blend of Steam punk meets apocalyptic imagery perfectly. If your a fan of the film , George millers work or into all things futuristic then this book has some great images, artist painting and designers sketches to feed your appetite. For me its the awesome vehicles designs and concept art of the characters that made me want to purchase this book but also just a big fan of the film! oh and in the hope that one day I can maybe turn my slowly beaten ford into my own very own V8 interceptor

This is a fantastic book. The development and design of the vehicles and props is absorbing. There are anecdotes from production and details that cannot be seen on screen. Well worth a read for fans of the film, especially if you are a maker or petrol head.

Mad Max Obssession
After watching the movie, I have become a huge fan of the whole concept and creation of this alternative post-apocalyptic Mad Max world! I wanted to learn about the creating process. This book is a delight: the process, art and story are unfolded for the reader in both the text and graphics. I loved it so much, I also bought one each for my artist twins!

I've received a few request for the review of this artbook and now it's finally here. The Art of Mad Max: Fury Road is a huge 176-page hardcover artbook that measures 16 inches diagonally across. This book features the art and making of the film. In terms of break down, I would say it's 50-50 art and photography. The art consists of storyboards, story scene paintings, character and vehicle design. The photography are of film stills, behind the scenes shots and those to highlight certain aspect, such as close ups on the different vehicles. The photos are fantastic also because they are really high res where you can see lots of details and well composed like film art. The artworks are beautiful with a nice textural feel to them. I'm not sure how they are created but majority is definitely not digital painting, more like pencils, pastels, and those grainy medium, and some paintings also. Some drawings actually reminded me of Moebius' art because of the level of detail rendered. So what's featured exactly? Furiosa and the wives, Immortan Joe, Coma the Doof Warrior, Miss Giddy, Nux and the many other characters. Vehicles are the highlight also and we have the War Rig, Gigahorse, Big Foot and various other pursuit vehicles. The vehicle designs are really amazing. Overall, there's this really gritty steampunk look to everything and everything seems to work well together visually. The commentary included talks about the filming process, the characters, story plot at time, vehicles, building stuff, the staging and even some nostalgia from the first few Mad Max films. It's an insightful read. This is a seriously good art book. Highly recommended. (See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)
