Is there anything stopping the depth stop from marking the surface you are drilling in to? I have seen other sets that have plastic collars on.

It is possible to mark wood when you reach final depth, However if you fix apiece of transparent 1000 gauge polythene sheet over the area with masking tape, you will be able to see the drill site and there is much less danger of marking wood. In almost all joining situations the drill site is covered by other workpiece and not visible

Do these clamp onto the cutting edges of the drill, not just the shank. - the twist profile?

Not sure what you mean by "cutting", as only the tip of the drill cuts, the spiral grooves are there to remove waste sawdust for the hole being drilled. I found that you can bolt these onto what you call the "cutting" part of the drill without a problem, as they are bolted onto the outer surface of the drill shaft.
