In 1984, however, they achieved broader public attention when they were commissioned to write the music for the ITV series Robin Of Sherwood. By now, they had incorporated rock instruments and synthesisers into their music alongside the pipes and bodhrans. The resulting sound may have upset purists, but it made for extremely effective accompaniment to the series' broody, mystical take on the Sherwood legend. The ambient drones of "Herne" (as in Herne The Hunter, the demi-God of the forest whom Robin reveres), "Battles" and the haunting "Darkmere" were a good deal more crucial to the overall atmosphere of the series than one or two of the acting performances and are eminently listenable in their own right. --David Stubbs Review: Buy if you were 80s child - it sounds even better now - quality from the great irish sooth singers - Oh my word - little did I remember of this superb soundtrack to my childhood - I was about 7 when I was watching this and rmember we had the cassette version on the spin regularly in the house - and from the point of view now I can see why it was so popular. This is a stunning record by Clannad - yes the opening robin hood track makes you grin and chuckle because lets face it it sounds proper 80s cheesy if you grew up during that time - but it is good still - the rest of the record sends continual shivers down your spine....I barely remember the tv series - I remember the feel of it- much dictated by this amazing soundtrack - I can remember it was a good twist on the mythology and there was a strong atmospheric quality to it - again much down to the soundtrack as much as the visual direction.........so yes Im now awaiting series one in the post to see how well that tv programme holds up - I remember it was pretty good....but sometimes memories play tricks on you - when you grow up you hear certain things differently - but this record honestly made me tearful, nostalgic, but also I felt surprised by its sheers quality. Proper celtic inspiration! Texturally fantastic - when The Battle kicks in for its brief roll - oh yes.......quality folk from this great irish sooth singers! ENjoy Review: Unrivalled excellence, whether you view it as a soundtrack or stand-alone album. - I love this album. I always have, and the likelihood is that I always will. I was born in 1984, and my mother had the original Legend LP. This is the music I was raised on, and believe me, it gets under your skin in a way you cannot imagine. Once heard, never forgotten. The LP disappeared sometime when I was growing up, but the fantastic music from this album lingered on in my psyche for years. Until, in fact, I was able to hear it again when this CD was released. The tracks are so beautiful. At once both haunting and rousing, they are highly evocative - of what is hard to describe. Of the excellent Robin of Sherwood itself, without question, but of a larger theme as well. Of an age that never was, perhaps. Of half-myth, half-reality (which is why the use of traditional sound and vocals with synthesizers works so amazingly well). Of unity, mystery, long-forgotten pagan gods, of hope, fear and love. I suppose the track titles speak for themselves - Strange land, Ancient Forest, Battles. As well as being musically brilliant, this (like most of Clannad's superb repertoire) is the sort of album you can devote your full attention to enjoying, or simply play in the background. My favourite tracks are Ancient Forest, Together We and Strange Land, but there isn't a track on the album I dislike. Buy it if you like Clannad, Robin of Sherwood, or astoundingly beautiful and stirring works of music.

feel it in your guts
No need to go over the details of the original 10 tracks; they're just as awesome as they were back in the mid-eighties when they first appeared. Track 11 is worthy of mention though; it's a heavy upbeat busy sounding chill-out mix of Together We. If you like big sounds, there's little to compare. The bass (extraordinarily low frequency - you'll need a quality system to really get the best out of it) is truly inter-galactic yet firmly controlled and I absolutely love the crisply reverb-ed Kraftwerk (Man Machine) snare drum. Combined with beautifully produced full range percussion, this track takes chill to new levels of deep coolity.

Still as Magical as when I First heard it on Vinyl.
I brought this on Vinyl when It first came out. Wayyyy back when LOL. Sadly no deck to play it on so got the digital download. Still a magnificent Album. The Music catches the Series it was done for and the Character pieces are as perfect as ever. You wont be disappointed. Only us oldies will be but purely because the Artwork for the inner sleeve of the vinyl is missing of course. The Music stands the test of time.

Roh - bin, the hooded man - dum dum!!
I have this on cassette (from when I was 12), on 2 CDs (the original and the one with extra's) and now on my Kindle - the first album I have bought for it! Really relaxing for reading with, this album is the best (in my veiw) Clannad offering bearing in mind that all other Clannad albums are excellent! I bought Legend originally when I was 12 and madly into Robin of Sherwood (my first crush was on Jason Connery) and this introduced me to the wonders of Clannad. When i got married in 2007 at Thornbury Castle i had this album playing in the background for my guests and i entered the room to Lady Marion. Ironically the 5th (i think) track is called Battle and my new surname was Battle!!!! If you want somewhere to start your Clannad collection or just to bring back some memories of the 80's I would urge you to buy Legend.

As a hard core Moody Blues fan, I read an article about Tony Clarke producing this album in the Moody Blues magazine Higher and Higher. Since Tony Clarke did a fantastic job with the Moodies, I thought I'd try this album out and see just what it was like. The article I read indicated that Tony Clark was asked to produce Clannad's Legend album, a task which he under took. He was supposed to incorporate the sounds of the Moody Blues, Alan Parsons, and Pink Floyd rolled into one. Again, Tony Clarke came through. Legend is one brilliant album and if you listen closely, you can hear the Parsons, Moodies, and Floyd influences in this recording. This is one of the best recording I have heard in a very long time. It is relaxing, a bit New Age yet quenches the thirst of the soul for some brilliant entertainment. If your an Alan Parsons, Pink Floyd and/or Moody Blues fan, you're going to love this CD. Incorporating the sounds of three supergroups, I would imagine, would be a very difficult task. Tony Clarke in all his brilliance managed to do that and yet kept the Irish roots of Clannad rolled into one. This is a definate must for anyone!
