Difficult question to answer without knowing my audience. $129 is a lot to spend on ANY toy. If one is an adult collector, it is easily worth the investment because the stinginess of LEGO with putting dinosaurs in their JW sets will make the value hold up in the long run (licensed LEGO sets for wildly popular films and shows really hold their value if kept in good condition). I have no doubt this line will be popular due to the box office record the movie just set. If you are buying it for a child, I would suggest saving money by waiting until Christmas season when we'll probably see it drop in price by $30 or so OR I would suggest buying the Wal-Mart exclusive set, which is essentially a miniature version of this set that comes with two raptors while also buying the vet truck set that comes with Owen, Claire and the other two raptors. You would get two sets instead of one and would have all four raptors as well as the main character. If you ONLY buy this set, all you get is one of the main kids, two nameless characters, and the geneticist that doesn't have a huge role in the movie. The minifig selection, as I pointed out in my review, is by the far the biggest drawback. You get absolutely hosed in that regard for the money. However, this is the only way to get the i-rex, which is the straight up main villain in the movie.

How is paying $500 justified? I understand supply and demand, but I have seen sets larger and 20 years older that are selling for a fraction of that.

Older sets dont mean more popular, more recent sets tend to be better and have better value, this set was easily the most desirable of the JW sets because it has the indominus and good minifigs selection and great set. This sold out very quickly and Lego did a rare SECOND Production run of these and those too sold out quickly.
